What do I need for chemo

Hi there,

I'm due to start chemotherapy in 3 weeks time. Does anyone have any helpful tips of what I can do to build my immune system up before hand and what I would need to pack to take with me?

Any tips would be greatly received

  • Hi Jess,

I am not the patient it's my husband who had had pre op and post op chemo for Oesophageal cancer. He drank pomegranate juice for platelets. Also all dark green veg contain lots of vitamins and iron. He was fortunate to be able to eat so he had plenty of meat, fish, fruit and vegetables and anything he fancied. If you have a dietitian through your cancer team they are helpful and if you Google immune boasting foods it gives you some tips. He has honey and lemon as an alternative drink and lemon and ginger tea.

I was able to go with my husband for the first round. The nurses and staff are brilliant. He coped much better than I imagined and chemotherapy is much more targeted now. Also cancer team on helpline are excellent and prefer you to contact them if you have any concerns.

He took his phone, something to read and some snacks. His chemo was for around 6 hours but some people come for just an hour or two. The specialist nurses are a great source of information. Be assured that they look after you with six star service. All the best and try not to worry - you will get through it.

keeping the faith (something we do on our chat!)
