Waiting times for Breast surgery in Scotland

Hi

Recently been diagnosed with grade 2 lobular breast cancer, it took 7 wks from seeing the lump and referral being sent to being seen at hospital for biopsy, mammogram, 2 wks later been given diagnosis, I am now waiting for surgery and again worrying tht I'll be waiting again, it's really a horrible time to have these issues when the NHS has these backlogs, has anyone else recently had breast surgery and how long did you wait?

  • Hi Lola

I don't know what the waiting list is like now but imagine there will be a backlog. When I was diagnosed 4 years ago, I waited 3 months for surgery for the 1st surgery and then another 3 months for margin clearance. There were some fellow breast cancer patients who only waited a couple of weeks for surgery. I don't know why there some got it earlier than me but you should call your breast cancer nurse to get an indication of when the operation is likely to happen and make a fuss if it is going to be too long a time. Wish I had done the same.

I think it will be done on a priority basis as most surgeries are when there's a backlog. My wife who had grade 3, and had extensive disease in the left breast before chemo waited 3 weeks for surgery after her chemo ended. Had it been grade 1 or 2, with no lymph node involvement, maybe it would have been longer, i dunno. But aye, she was dealt with pretty quickly all things considered. She'd probably have had surgery sooner had she not had a rough time on her last chemo. She also had some liver counts out of kilt, so i think that might have added to the 3 weeks. She's 4 weeks post surgery now, so the above example is the here and now.
