Waiting for results after surgery

So I had a lumpectomy and a sentinel nose biopsy yesterday, now I've got a long 4 week wait for the results im just wondering what I can expect from these results can it make my original diagnosis worse? etc? Im now worried sick that it will turn out to be worse than they originally thought I have no clue what to expect again I should have asked more questions but was still coming round when the surgeon came to see me.

  • Amara

hope you have a speedy recovery

they will check that they have clearance around the lump that was taken if there's not clearance they will perform a second operation to make sure this is only to be sure it's all gone  and check your sentil nodes to see if it contains cancer

for me one sentil node had a teeny trace  node was positive so had to have another operation removing 30 nodes these all come back clear my wait was only 7 days I went private

I then had radiotherapy 5 sessions now all clear I finished in nov back to my fully busy life now

    hope you are feeling ok

hete to chat love Lara ️

  • Hi Lara nice to hear from you again, well I got diagnosed with grade 1 invasive ductal carcinoma they said they only took 2 of my lymph nodes out as they was clumped together? I'm worried that if it has gone to the lymph nodes would that make my original diagnosis worse or like yourself is it just a case of taking more out, also seems like a long wait 4 weeks I only waited 2 weeks for my original diagnosis and that seemed like forever x

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear that you need to have breast cancer treatment.

You are now waiting to hear the results of the surgery and the sentinel lymph node biopsy you had.

All the breast cancer that was removed will be looked at under a microscope, looking to see if the tissue margins around the cancer are free from cancer. If there is cancer in the margins, which can sometimes happen, it can mean you have to go back and have more surgery.  But this may not happen so try not to dwell on it.

If there are cancer cells in the lymph nodes they usually need more treatment but again this may not happen.

Waiting for the results can be difficult but hopefully they will confirm what the doctors already think. I hope you are recovering well after surgery.
