Vulvar cancer

Hi, I was diagnosed with vulver  cancer, December 2019, I had my 1st op at the start of December and 2nd op January 2020. I have had a part of the vulver cut away and the cliterous shaved, he left a small amount for sexual purposes. I saw my consultant 6 weeks later and he gave me the good news I was cancer free, but I have never stopped itching, which has spread so much up to my anus and down my legs and the worst is on the pubic bone. I was given strong steroid cream to use over a month but found it was too strong. I went to see 2 different doctors who were rude and didn’t want to really help me or even look at the area. Eventually one gave me a lower steroid cream which has helped but not got rid of the ulcers or the itchiness altogether. 8 months have gone by before being able to see my consultant, he was concerned and said that because of the steroid cream it’s done some damage and I now have eczema!!. He wanted to see me before Christmas but it never happened. I am go crazy with the itching, not sleeping, I’ve had a bit of bleeding from both ends, I find I can’t walk far as just too sore. I spend a lot of days in a nightdress as I find this help, but my health has deteriorated. I suffered for 18 months before seeing a consultant with what doctors were saying was thrush but none of the creams or tablets worked and not was I actually seen by a doctor to probably diagnose, mainly as there were no chaperones. So exhausted and at my wits end with it all.

  • Hello Scared53

I'm sorry to hear about all that you've been through and that despite the good news that all cancer has been removed that you're continuing to live with after-effects of the treatment. It sounds as if it's really impacting on your daily quality of life and I can understand why you are exhausted and at your wits end.

As the Consultant wanted to see you before Christmas I'd suggest giving his secretary a call and asking what is happening with your next appointment. Explain that the delay in seeing him last time led to further problems developing and as a result your life is impacted on a daily basis. If the secretary is unable to help with information about a follow up you might want to think about getting in touch with the hospital PALS department particularly if the delays are due to a lack of chaperones.

You might also want to give our team of nurses a call. I'm sure that they would be able to offer some support and may have some advice they can share about coping with things. If you'd like to chat with them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I really hope that you're able to see the specialist again soon and that they are able to help get on top of things.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you Jenn, I will do as you say, I feel at times my Consultant likes to push me to one side, he keeps giving me this clear licqid that has to be kept in the fridge and keeps saying that will sort you out, it irritates me more. I will give the nurse a call Monday as well xxxx

  • Hello. I to am waiting for diagnosis for vulva cancer have had costant burning pain there for five weeks. I thought it may have been my coil but I had my third examination today. And found little brown mole like spots in my vulva I am in so much pain I hope you have good recovery and everything goes well I'm so scared

  • Hello Emila, hopefully for you, it will be a good outcome. I didn’t have any burning just itching and the itching is much worse now. I really hope you get seen very soon and your mind is put at rest. In these trying times, cancer patients are pushed to the back. If you have some cancerous growths, I found they acted straight away, went and had tests done straight away and then in the following week. It is quite painful after and I had to get something stronger from the doctors for a while. If you have a bath, have a soak in empsom salts. I must admit, I’ve got a coil in too and thought it was the coil to blame but my consultant said no, I too had a lot of pain and still do, sharp stabbing pains , mainly around the pubic bone. Please let me know how you get on. Really wish you well xxxx
