Virus while on radiotherapy

Hi I have just finished my 5 week of radiothearpy for prostate cancer and so far it's been OK, but today I woke up at 2:30 am feeling hot, with a headache and pains in my joints and generally feeling lousy. Apart from resting and taking paracetamol should I try to contact the hospital? It's a 40 minute drive and I don't feel well enough to go to A&E if that makes sense!

  • Hi Mike and welcome to the forum.

I'm glad that your radiotherapy has been going ok so far although I'm sorry to read about the symptoms you've been experiencing today.

It sounds like you may be starting to experience some side effects from the radiotherapy but if you're concerned maybe you could contact someone from your medical team? You may have been given some contact numbers so you're able to get in touch with someone for incidents such as these so do have a look through any notes or letters you have to see if you have any and give them a call. If you can't find them you could always give the NHS 111 service a call. Do let family and friends know how you're feeling so they can look after you as well.

I hope the paracatemol and resting works Mike and that you start to feel better soon.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Mike. I just wanted to share my experience with you. I had 6 weeks of radiation and a few days after I got a cold which then turned into flu within a day and I experienced aches in my joints like never before and also had d&v along with sore throat and runny nose.

It is always best to be reassured and check with your medical team. A course of antibiotics didn't relieve my symptoms and I took nurofen with plenty of fluids. I was told by my bcn that it's common to go thru this. It was sheer hell but it passed and hopefully yours will too but best to let your medical team know. I am still one year on experiencing symptoms of treatment.

You got this so be fair to yourself and take it easy.
