Vaping is it really harmful to the surrounding area?

Hello Im TJ from America....i am new to the site and just looking for general information.  My best friend who lives in England has liver cancer and i am staying with him till he finishes his Chemo therapy.  He is very positive about beating it so rather than stay in the USA i thought it would be wiser to. be here with him and fight alongside of him.  My question has to do with Vaping....he doesn't nor ever has he, smoked before but I gave up smoking and switched to Vaping....I felt that it would be wiser for me to Vape without nicotene to avoid any complications for him but someone told me i couldn't vape at all near him.  I find this hard to believe as it is only Vapor nothing more.  However, I will Vape outside or in my bedroom if necessary.  Does anyone know for certain if Vaping non nicotene...is harmful to him?

  • Hi,

I've been smoking my e-ciggie 24/7 for over 4 years, all during chemo and radiotherapy, and all the time while an in-patient in hospital. I favour mint or menthol juice, with nicotine.

It should be noted that I also have COPD, yet my lungs seem unaffected by vaping.

I personally, don't see vaping as dangerous.

  • Hello TJ and thank you for posting a question.

I am one of the nurses and our moderators wondered if we could help. Unfortunately I cannot reliably answer your question about the safety of 'passive' vaping. This is because it has not been extensively studied. But even nicotine free vapes contain propylene glycol and flavourings. These have been tested in laboratory studies and do not appear to be harmful, but more research is needed before we can know for sure.

So, all I can really say is that it is unlikely to be medically harmful for your friend if you vape near them. But as you probably know people nearby can smell and, to a limited amount, taste 'second hand' vaping. If your friend is feeling a little nauseous from the cancer or the chemotherapy they may not take too kindly to the smell. So for this reason alone it might be better not to vape near your friend. But if they don't mind then it probably won't be harmful.

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Jean

  • Hi TJ,

I think Jean's response covers it. When I was on chemo I was very sensitive to smells and even a hint of certain smells was enough to start me dry-retching. My guess is that its the smell of the vape that's the issue. They're a bit like cigars ... some cigar smokers imagine that everyone loves the smell of them but many non-smokers would rather smell rotting fish than cigars lol

    Cheers

    Dave
