Unexplained lump above collarbone

Hi everyone,

I hope this post is okay, I'm not sure what's wrong with me and I don't want to offend those who have been diagnosed but I'm so anxious right now. I'm 20 years old, and I'm at university right now. About 4.5 weeks ago, I found a small lump above my collarbone on the left side. It feels about 1cm and is oval shaped, smooth and I can move it around easily. I noticed it the day after I had a flu jab so just thought it as an effect of that. It hadn't gone away in a week so I phoned the GP and they agreed to phone in three weeks. Three weeks later and it was still there, they ordered some bloods which all came back clear. They've referred me for an ultrasound after examining it - he said it felt like a lymph node and that from feeling it there shouldn't be anything to worry about. I just keep jumping to the worst conclusions and thinking that I have lymphoma, because I've had really bad fatigue for the past few months. I had glandular fever in summer 2019, and I'm so scared that it could have caused lymphoma. So sorry for the ramble, I just don't know what else it could be apart from that.

  • Hi vm123,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to read about your worries, although try not to get ahead of yourself with this or to assume anything. It sounds as if your doctor wasn't concerned, so hopefully you can take some reassurance from that.

The referral is good as it means you will find out more before too long and hopefully this will provide some peace of mind.

If you can, try to keep yourself busy while waiting for the results, to help keep your mind off things.

Wishing you all the best and I hope you find out more soon,

    Ben

  • Hi,

Tagging onto this coversation, almost releived to hear other people going through the same thing.

I had my covid vaccine (nhs radiographer) but a week or so after I found a small lump above my collarbone, it wss painless and I only found it because I poke around alot (the job makes me worry more than it should). Anyway i spoke to my gp and she called me in and had a feel and did a full blood count, testing inflammatory markers and all sorts. I even asked a consultant I work with to check it. ANYWAY  All came back perfectly normal, which is supposed to be a releif but its still there and getting alot of random bursts of  pain in my neck and collarbone.

The dreaded C word wont leave my brain, the doctor is worried at all. Is it normal for to have lumps? Has anyone had lumps that havent turned out to be ahnormal.

I work in cancer care so I know lumps and bumps arent normal...

Thank you to anyone who reads this.

    Xxx

  • Hi!

I work for NHS and have exact same symptoms. Had blood result which were normal (or satisfactory anyway). GP not concerned but as it has been there 6 weeks I have an ultrasound scan, which is actually tomorrow to check.

Its above my right collarbone (had jab on right) and is pea sized and movable ish. I suppose rubbery is the texture. There is a second slightly deeper lump but this is only size of pin head. No pain except I keep poking it.

I have been very stressed about it (not helped by moving house and job soon). It is keeping me awake at night and then I get hot and sweaty which makes me more paranoid of course. Not fun. Feeling a bit alone with it all.

Somewhat reassuring to hear you have a similar experience so far. How long has yours been there (if it is still there)? Was it the PFiza ? Swollen lymph nodes are being reported more in America than UK but mostly auxiliary.

  • Hi

I had my Covid vaccine (Astra Zeneca) two weeks ago. Two days later I felt an enlarged and slightly sore lymph node just above my collarbone on the right. After initially panicking ( I was diagnosed with breast cancer 7 years ago and am now in remission ) I put it down to  the vaccine which I had in my right arm. Two weeks later it is stil8 l there though, not changed in size - at least I don't think so!! - but no longer  painful. It seems to change size depending on how I feel it if that makes sense!! It's moveable  and slightly rubbery and apart from that I have no other symptoms and feel really well. I'm now feeling so worried though ( having foolishly googled superclavicular node!) and spend most of the day prodding it and imagining the very worst outcome. I have also read quite a few reports from the US about swollen lymph nodes post vaccine so am hoping that this is the case. I've now convinced myself that maybe it was there all along but seems a coincidence that I noticed it just after the jab. I plan to contact my go if it doesn't go down in a week - it's just the thought of re living what I went through 7 years ago that terrifies me and I've found myself in tears a lot today. It's sort of reassuring to hear that others have had the same experience - just hope we all have a good outcome. It's the not knowing that's so scary!!

  • It sounds like yours is very similar to mine (I agree it seems to depend on how I feel/ time of day or position I am in). It is really scary isn't it finding any kind of lump and must be very worrying when you have been through breast cancer before. I am also doing a lot of worrying and Googling and poking! I have also gone through times of convincing myself maybe it was always there and I didn't notice but wishful thinking I think. My dad had lymphoma 2 years ago and so I think that's why it has made me so anxious.

I have also read american reports and I saw a new article last week of case studies of patients who had ultrasound and/ or biopsies of their lymph nodes and had had benign results that were linked to their covid vaccine. Really wish there was more information in this country.

Not sure what tomorrow's ultrasound scan will bring? Sleep might be lacking tonight.

  • Will be thinking of you tomorrow. I think we have probably been reading all the same articles! I do wonder if there are lots of similar cases out there which just haven't been reported? It does seem such a coincidence that we noticed the lump within days of having the vaccine - well that"s what I keep telling myself! It makes it so hard to concentrate on anything else doesn't it.

Do hope you manage to get some sleep. x

  • Hi all, I too have a lump on collarbone and  my collarbone has been sore since  I noticed this lump in November. I'm awaiting blood test results  so will see how that goes. I've two lumps in my neck but also have  ear infection so that's  clearing up with antibiotics. Best of luck for tomorrow x

  • Hi!

So wanted to make sure I shared reassuring news. The two lymph nodes in my neck just above my collarbone were assessed as normal today. They are both about 5mm (even though touch one feels nearer to a cm and the other feels smaller). They have normal features. The sonographer and the consultant said they probably enlarged up due to the vaccine enough for me to feel them. I saw them on he screen looking normal. Now to try and settle my anxiety that I've been living with for 6 weeks! Hope this is reassuring.

  • That's great news and thank you so much for sharing it with us. Interesting that they confirmed that the vaccine can have that effect - I bet we are not the only ones panicking. I wondered if it is worth reporting it on The Coronavirus Yellow Card scheme? - they ask you to register any side effects to the vaccines. Hope you feel more relaxed now and are able to enjoy the rest of the day! I will get my node checked if it doesn't go down in a few weeks but definitely feel better about it after hearing your news. x
