Unclear margins

I had a lumpectomy 3 weeks ago and sentinel node biopsy.

Today I was told I had unclear margins by a millimetre

plus the original tumour was 6-9 mm

and there were 3 other dots too not showing on ultrasound..

so I need a mri to check.

Then review treatment plan.

Def need an op for the margins.

Its stage 1 grade 2 oestrogen pos breast cancer.

A dot on the first lymph but that’s been removed.. anyone Been in this situation ?

Worried and scared.

  • Don’t know if this helps or not but I did ask before I had my op, what happens if you don't get clear margins. The bcn said very clearly, even before the pathology was done, that there would be another op so that they did get clear margins. I don’t think it’s too unusual for this to happen and if the edges of what was being removed were irregular, that might make it more difficult initially to get the clear margin.

I also had two ‘tumours’, mine were so small that tumour seems to be a big overstatement. Was was designated as dcis the other was grade 2 invasive, oestrogen receptive.

Having more surgery is a knock back but most of the %#*! Is out now so lets get the rest out and see what th doc recommends after this!

  • Hi

i have just had a grade 2 18mm her2 neg hormone pod removed and have been for results today

my nodes are all clear but I have a small area on the margin so have to go bzck for more surgery

I have been reassured this is common and hopefully they will get it all and then I can heal again and have my next set of treatment

I agree it is scary and I have come home in tears

i was told the satalite will be similar or the same as it is from my main tumour, I don't really understand all this but just pray they get it all next time

I hope your 2nd lot of surgery goes well xx

  • Hi

  • Hi

    no chemo (phew)

    radiotherapy

And yes they got the margins the 2nd time.
They actually had got them the first time..

    rads was easy.
    Also was on tamoxifen.

    what treatment have you had?

just had both my knees replaced.

  • Ps the second op was easy.

I was at the hairdressers next day having a blow dry.

    f*** you cancer!!
but hey I'm all good and I wish I knew then what I know now.

I wouldn't have googled and I would have trusted my team and taken it day by day.
now my knees have been done my life is amazing

I'm so lucky and so grateful

    you will be fine.
    it's so treatable nowadays.

  • that's really cheered me up bless you

I agree f**k cancer, she's a ***, I need that attitude and less if the wo is me

how come you had 2nd op when they got margins 1sttime?

I've only just started my journey, had my lumpectomy on 10th may, results today. Lymph nodes clear so it's only in the breast which is good, surgeon only took a 1mm margin so going back for another mm and hope he gets it, it was only in 1 area and so small he said u would need a microscope ti see it! I just pray after this it's all clear, then I think radiotherapy and tamoxifen (I'm praying I won't need chemo) I'm pre menopause and the main tumour was her2 neg and strongly pr er positive so should respond well to hormone tx

i feel so disappointed I have to have a 2 nd op but very reassured that everyone says it's much easier than the first

thank you for holding me up and giving me hope

  • I was so upset about the 2nd op.
so I went to Dubai lol. For a holiday before it.
it's so much easier, I recovered quick.
my surgeon thought it was right on the edge so he went back in. He's very thorough. The tissue has no cancer in it.
I had multi focal breast cancer. 5 bloody tumours!
all small. Only detected by mri!
I was screen detected. Having yearly mammogram as my mum had died of b/c at 46.
    I was 49. I'm now 54.
    I was so lucky.

  • Ps I was so grateful not to have chemo

Rads was easy. I went every day for 20 sessions.
I think they do it for less time now.
Also my tumours were by my chest wall.
I had my first op 22/12/17

went to Lapland as thought it was my last Xmas haha.
    then second op in feb.
    then rads in June.
    then tamoxifen

to be honest have found knee replacement much harder.

    you will be ok.
    sounds exactly like me.
I don't worry about it. If it returns I'll deal with it again but if it's going to pop up again it usually the first two years.

  • Oh my goodness that's crazy

were all 5 in the same breast? Did you have 1 lumpectomy or 5!?

you were so lucky compared to your poor mum, what a shame treatment was so good when she was here

sending you love and pleased you are all good now

would love a holiday in Dubai ! Xx
