Treatment for lung cancer with immunotherapy (pembrolizumab)

I was diagnosed with stage 3B non small cell lung cancer in September 2016 at the age of 60. After some furher testing I started on a clinical trial in November 2016. I received infusions of pembrolizumab every 21 days. My first CT scan after 6 weeks showed a noticable contraction in the tumour mass. This response continued throughout the clinical trial and the only notable side effect was fatigue for a day or so after an infusion which lessened as time went on. After 35 cycles the tumour looks to have contracted by about 70 %.

If anyone has had a similar diagnosis I would recommend that they ask  their doctor if they think that they would be elegible for immunotherapy as the NHS has now made it available as an option for lung cancer treatment. It doesn't work for everyone who qualifies but it can be a game changer for some.

My only concern now is that I would like to continue with treatment after 35 cycles but the trial has finished. I would like to get in touch with anyone in the same position as me to compare notes on treatment duration.

  • Hello MauriceS,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. It seems that you have had an excellent response to the clinical trial and suffered minimal side effects. Thanks a lot also for mentioning that immunotherapy is now available on the NHS for lung cancer treatment - I am sure the information will be very useful to lung cancer patients reading your post who may not be aware of this.

It is amazing that the tumour has contracted by 70% and I hope that despite the trial having come to an end, you will be able to continue treatment.

I've done a little detective work on our forum looking for other threads that may be relevant to you from past members who posted about being on the same immunotherapy treatment and this thread in particular by [@missusb]‍ caught my attention. There are several members on this thread who mentioned being on this trial for lung cancer like [@missusb]‍ and [@SheTing]‍ for whom it has also been a success it seems. I hope you will hear from them soon and that you can exchange notes on treatment effects and duration.

Keep in touch Maurice and let us know how you get on!

    Best wishes,

  • On completion of 12 months on pemba results showing canscer shrinking to scar tissue..side effects .rash.on legs an affecting thyroid levels.seem to b losin wiegh an muscle weakness..could this b thyroid medication or result of immuno therapy. Walsall f.c.

  • Congratulations that pembrolizumab is working for you.

I did not receive thyroid medication nor did I experience weight loss during treatment. I don't believe weight loss is a side effect of immunotherapy but I am not a doctor so I can't say for sure, you will have to check with your own doctor.

Keep up with the excellent response.
