Travel Insurance Suggestions

Hello,

Would anyone have a good suggestion for a travel insurance provider for someone with cancer? I'm having trouble getting insurance for my 48 yr old husband that isn't extortionate. He was diagnosed in May 2021 with a GIST in the bowel and has been on Imatinib with no side effects since end of June. He's continuing to work, symptoms have resolved (gone from a cocktail of 16 painkillers a day to absolutely none!) and he's actually in much better shape that he was pre-diagnosis. We've been told he will be on this drug for 3 years, and may need to have surgery in 12-18 months time but that is not confirmed or definite. When I speak to insurers, they want yes or no answers, there's no box to tick for his type of treatment as such (targeted therapy rather than conventional chemo), and I can't give a yes/no answer to the surgery question. It feels like there are no companies that cater for people in his position. The lowest price I've got to date is £1600 which is more than what the holiday cost! I find it all really baffling, as 3 years ago my mum was quoted £300 by boots for cover. And she had terminal lung cancer with brain mets. By my reckoning, my husband is less likely to fall ill than my mum was! But I know I'm not an insurance broker so I've no idea what sort of wizardy goes on in the background. It's made me so annoyed that I almost want to start campaigning for better access to insurance or for companies to at least look at people as individuals rather than try and fit everyone into 5 or so boxes.

This holiday was booked a year ago and I'm loathe to cancel as we both need a break. I've arranged for GHIC cards and his oncologist is supportive of him going abroad. He's having bloods checked the week before we go to make sure all is still good with the treatment.

Does anyone know of any specialist companies that might be able to help?

Thank you,

Sarah

  • Hello SarahCal

I'm sorry to hear that you're having problems with finding affordable travel insurance following your husband's diagnosis.

We know that this is an issue that many people have posted about in the past and hopefully some of our members will reply to share their recommendations with you. I wonder if you may find it easier to approach an independent insurance broker who could do the leg work for you in terms of contacting different insurance companies. It may be another avenue to look into.

I do hope that you're able to get something sorted and that you can get away on your holiday as planned.

    Best wishes,

    Hi SarahCal,

As Jenn says, this is a problem for many people with cancer. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 12 years. My husband has Heart Failure, Vascular Dementia, Vascular Parkinson's, Diabetes, had a Quadruple By-pass (20 years ago), followed by a Stroke and several TIAs since then.

We had no problem getting him insured and my cancer wasn't much of a problem, but the fact that I take  more than 3 tablets to control my blood pressure was the stumbling block. We take out an annual insurance policy for travel and pay about £300 per year. Admittedly, this doesn't cover the USA. We found Staysure (0800 033 4902) very helpful throughout the years.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I’m in the same predicament, lowest quote so far is £1700 from good to go and £2300 from saga, I have stage 3 advanced lung cancer latest scans show tumour shrunk, not travelling till next year as my daughter is getting married in Cyprus, can’t afford these sort of prices .

  • Hello Evelyn

Can I just ask if you are actually talking to someone at the insurance companies rather than trying to obtain a quote online? It’s always more difficult doing a “tick the box” exercise online because it doesn’t always include the right kind of questions for those of us with cancer. It’s always better to phone and speak to a real person in my experience. I am covered via my partner’s travel insurance through the bank and we always call them up before every trip to update them. We’ve never been charged extra, and they have always been extremely helpful. I hope you can find something more affordable to allow you to make the trip-those prices are just extortionate!
