Tonsil inflammation on one side

So just to get some worries off my chest, hopefully, I noticed yesterday that I had quite a sore throat and that it hurt a little when I swallowed. I looked in the mirror with a flashlight and saw that on one side of my mouth, I had some white spots, self diagnosing with Google I found it could be tonsillitis and left it at that hoping to get a doctors appointment just to check. I woke up again today and found that the other side of my mouth had some white spots I hadn't noticed, and that an area behind my tonsil had inflamed and there was a little lump thats a little bit hard. The first thing that came to mind was that it could be a tumour that had grown, panicking I Googled the symptoms of tonsil cancer and found apart from sharing a lot of symptoms with tonsillitis that the enlargement of one side of the tonsil and not the other could be a distinguishable sign. I'm 17, and I hear that the most vulnerable are people who are older, but I was pretty worked up about it because although I'm not a regular smoker, my tobacco consumption has been particularly higher recently than ever before. In around October I had a joint with some mates and since then had one every say two weeks or so, but decided in December that I would smoke them with just weed because with tobacco they're really harsh. Within the past two weeks or so I had three cigarettes to myself, but it's not like I crave them or anything. So since October I've probably totaled around 7 cigarettes, not that many to cause damage but still it's the reason I find this so worrying. I'm going to the doctors tomorrow, if not the day after, is this a cause for concern?

The white spots are behind both of my tonsils, but you can't see them that well.

  • Hi 1frx,

I'd like to welcome you to the forum.

I hope you have been to the doctors as they will give you the best advice. Searching on Google can be tempting, but it will only make you panic and there's a lot of misinformation around.

The most important thing is to have an appointment and if you have any concerns in the meantime, you can contact the Cancer Chat nurses for free advise on 0808 800 4040. Lines are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. You can contact via the online form here if you feel more comfortabe doing that.

    Hope this helps,
