Tongue cancer: laser removal

I had my op yesterday to remove a t1 no 1cm squamous cell carcinoma from side of tongue. Although I feel ok today my tongue feels as though it's nearly been pulled out of my mouth. The area they removed is very large considering it was such a small thing. I was only in as a day case and have been given lots of meds to help with pain. Can'talk much or eat very well at the moment. I've been told this is all the treatment I'll need pending the biopsy results. Fingers crossed. Has anyone got any advice for me re eating and recovery please.

  • Hello Elen,

I am glad your operation went well though the sensation you describe in your tongue must be a very strange one indeed and it must be very frustrating not to be able to talk or eat properly at the moment but I hope the meds will help ease the pain.

I hope you don't mind but I have added the words 'tongue cancer' in your title. This will help others  who have had an operation for tongue cancer see your post more easily. We do have many people on this forum who have been diagnosed and had successful treatment for tongue cancer. If you just type 'tongue cancer' in the forum's search engine, you will be impressed by the number of posts we have had on this subject and hopefully you will be able to just take your pick from the countless threads we've had on the subject and connect with others who have recovered from this operation before.

Our nurses may also be able to give you some guidance on this so don't hesitate to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 if you live in the UK- their line is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pn.

Best wishes for a speedy full recovery,

  • I had my 2 cm tumor removed from tongue last week . Doctors will do a biopsy and I will get to know about it this coming Tuesday . I have earache when I swallow and also have a little bit of sore throat which got better last week .I'm also hoping for the best but what is reassuring is there is treatment for tongue cancer. I'm only 31 years old .Wish you all the best :)

  • I also have earache when I swallow. I had my op on 8th Aug and today the charred look has gone and been replaced by a yellow covering. I am having difficulty eating solids but I crumble a slice of bread in cream of tomato soup and I can eat that. I am going to try a soft boiled egg ans buttered bread for lunch today. I had porridge for breakfast. My husband has optimisticly made cottage pie for tonight . Not so sure I can manage that. The very best of luck to you for your biopsy result and for the future.
