To worry or not to worry?

For a while I've been questioning IBS.

I plucked up the courage to contact my gp who said 'it sounds like IBS' and prescribed me mebeverine.
ive been taking that for 3 weeks now and still don't feel better, I'm concerned I haven't had any test (blood/stool) so my minds going a bit crazy. I'm planning on contacting them again later in the week.

for years I've noticed an onset of a flare up when I encounter stress (work/before medical appointments/holidays) when over the last 3 months (whilst being on mat leave after 2nd baby) I've had a flare up that's currently been going on for 3 months.

everyday when I open my bowels it's usually normal, then I have to go Atleast 1/2 more times each day with usually are much looser or completely watery.
On avarage that's 2/3 times a day, when it's runny I can control it with Imodium but the next day I'm back into square 1.

i have abdominal cramps on bad days, and no bleeding from rectum (occassionally I have a fissure that reopens if I've had constipation)

ive began to feel dizzy some times In the day and am usually tired - could just be due to having a 6 month old?

I haven't noticed any weight loss.

any ideas welcome please!! (I will be asking for a blood/stool test when I contact gp again)

  • Hi,

I smiled when I read your post.... not because I think it is funny, but it sounded soooooo very familiar . I am on here for my husbands oesophageal cancer, which is currently behaving itself.

First answer is ALWAYS go back if it is bothering you.

Now for my story .... I had gripey guts for years, sort of started in my 20's , of course I too was 'diagnosed' with IBS......

Nothing ever really worked.... fast forward a few years, post maternity, now at 40 it steps up to quite horrible acute upper abdo pain. Get this- GP thought it was probably an ulcer, just chucked me the antacids, guess what, didn't help a jot; then it was contstipation, back to ibs again, bought all the usual substances, which of course didn't help at all -this went on for 4 years.... then I thought I wonder if my gallbladder is playing up ( after a chance discussion with a friend). Almost jested with the GP and asked for a scan....

Low and behold, not just a bit of 'grit' but huge gallstones blocking my bile duct. Surgeon subsequently said that is was 'rancid, and years in the making'

I had it out 2 years ago and for some strange reason, all my 'ibs, constipation and stomach ulcer' symptoms disappeared over night...... funny that, and worse I had to Self diagnose.

Post maternity is a real high point in the 'construction ' of stones.

So in short, GO BACK and make sure you get investigated, you know your body (:

    cheers

    Hilts

  • Thank you so much for the quick response!

it's almost reassuring that it wasn't the C word which caused your problems (sorry to hear of your husband, wishing him a full recovery! )

im back to work next month and I'm terrified that I'm still going to be feeling this way and needing frequent bathroom trips when I'm working.

i didn't have any of these current issues till after I was put on iron after my 2nd was born
