Thyroid surgery - tips and recommendations post surgery.

Hi everyone,

I have not been on here for a while because I felt like I needed a bit of a break, but I hope everyone is feeling ok.

I have my thyroid surgery on Friday to take away the tumour in my right lobe, I am really *** myself, three reasons really... 1) I’m worried about not waking up after surgery 2) I’m worried about waking up during surgery (the stuff everyone worries about) and because I’m currently breastfeeding it adds an element of trickiness, because I want to get in and get out in a quick amount of time, preferably the morning after my surgery.

I am not sure if I’m going to be able to have morphine as a pain relief, because I am planning on feeding my baby on the ward when dad brings him at visiting time (he won’t take a bottle or expressed milk from a cup).

Therefore, I’m looking for anything you can recommend me to make it less painful for me after surgery, do I need to take a few extra pillows? I’ve been looking at sore throat remedies on amazon, found some pastilles and some anaesthetic spray, will this help me?

I am currently unwell (again!) at the moment with 39+ temperature and all my lymph nodes have gone to *** in my neck and I’m in agony, I’m thinking it’s the earths way of getting me prepared for the pain next week

Speak soon x

  • Hi Charrrx,

I haven't been on here for a while too and I've only just read your other post about the results of your biopsy and I am terribly sorry to hear that it turned out to be a tumour and that you need surgery. I have not had thyroid surgery (I'll have my biopsy results tomorrow) but I had 4 surgeries for other issues and might be  having another one next week. All surgeries were under total anaesthetic and i had no problems .You shouldn't worry about not waking up after the surgery or waking up in the middle of it.Anaesthetic procedures and techniques are quite advanced nowadays, and doctors very skilled. I know it's difficult not to worry but you shouldn't really worry about that.

For the pain I am not sure what would help in case of the thyroid surgery but for me I had to be on very strong pain killers afterwards and morphine for a short while.I'm sure someone else on here will be able to give you more advice on this.

Best of luck for your hope and best wishes for a speedy recovery. Here for support xx

  • Hi angel.

Sorry it has taken me a while to get back to you, I did see your message at th time but was a bit under the weather.

Well, the good need is that everything has come back benign! I found out a few hours ago.

The thyroid lump was a follicular adenoma and in surgery they found extra tissue which looked like a normal lymph nodes but this has also come back as benign extra thyroid tissue. I am so lucky because the surgeon was very worried at the time.

  • Hi Charrx,

No worries for not replying earlier and it's good hearing from you.

I am so glad to hear that the results have concluded that the lump was benign.I can imagine how relieved you are after all the we worry of the last months.

I hope you can now relax and recover from the op and soon leave all this awful experience behind.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

    Angel xx
