Thyroid Surgery.

Hi.

I have thyroid suergey in 3 weeks. Half of it is being removed along with a nodule (it has had an atypical biopsy result and has been flagged up on a pet scan). I still don’t know if it’s cancer of not.

Anyway; has anyone had the surgery?

What’s the recovery like?

Thabj you Xxx

  • Hello SophieN,

I just wanted to drop by and send you my good wishes for your thyroid surgery. I hope you make a speedy recovery. I hope you are not too stressed while waiting for the operation day - it can often feel like time is dragging on and I hope you have all the information you need to prepare yourself for the surgery.

We have some information on our website on the partial thyroidectomy which you can read here. This general information will tell you more about going into hospital, preparing for surgery, what happens on the day and after surgery. It must be stressful for you not to know yet whether it is cancer or not.

I hope you will also meet others here who have had thyroid surgery before. I had a little look on the forum and noticed that [@Kel668]‍ mentioned a few months ago that she had had her thyroid removed as a result of an overactive thyroid so hopefully she will pop here and share her experience with you and what the recovery was like. If you click on the 'search forum' icon on the blue banner at the top and type keywords like 'thyroid surgery' you will be able to see past threads and respond to any that may be relevant to you.

Our nurses are also just a free phone call away so don't hesitate to give them a ring on 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. I am sure they will be happy to answer any questions you may have for example on the surgery.

I hope it all goes well for you - keep in touch and let us know how it all goes for you. We'll be keeping everything crossed.

    Best wishes,
    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Thank you so much for this reply.

I will have a read of the info and give the nurses a call... as I still don’t understand some results that are so confusing to me.

  • Hey, yeah I had my thyroid removed in 2014, my experience was fine as far as surgeries go. I've had my tonsills out last month and it was horrendous!! Thyroid I just found I was a bit light headed for a few days after but apart from that it was fine. I hope you get on OK and it turns out to be nothing xx

  • Hi Sophie

I am in your same situation. Half thyroid out next week with nodule. Had a chat with nurse here and very reassuring.

I am focussing on my recovery. About to download a book about recovery from surgery from Amazon. Going to get a little porogramme organised to start walking after surgery.

    Keep busy and be hopeful.

Lots of prayers and love your way.

    Be xxxx
