Thoughts that keep going around my head!

I am waiting for an appointment to have a colonoscopy.

Having had slight change in bowel movements with intermitant rectal mucas and bleeding for about 6months but no pain and no weight loss, I contacted my GP who sent me for blood tests which came back normal. I then contacted her again when I started having bleeding every day for 2 weeks. I knew it wasnt my anal fissure because when that becomes active I always have pain. The doctor agreed and thought it a good idea to send me straight to have colonoscopy, saying she didnt think examining me would be of any use.

I had a telephone appointment with the doctor from the hospital because of covid restrictions. He asked me 3 questions.....bleeding?change in bowel habits?weight? I answered.....bleeding every day for past 6 weeks.....no weight loss........change in bowels as in going more often and watery. He recommended colonoscopy and should receive a letter with appointment within the next 3 weeks. That was 2 weeks ago, so hopefully I will receive the letter next week. I have been bleeding every day since then, making it now a total of 8 weeks bleeding every day with a bowel movement.

My question is.....could it be internal piles? as I never thought of that when talking with the doctors. Also I cant help wondering that if it wasnt for the covid restrictions, my GP would have examined me first. I'm pleased in a way that I've been referred straight for a colonoscopy......but also that if I had of been examined for internal piles, then it may have saved me from having to undergo the colonoscopy.

  • Hello! Sorry to hear you are worrying. I also suffer from anal fissures and internal and external piles. I bleed every time I have a bowel movement fresh red blood. I had a sigmoidoscopy last year and attempted

banding of the piles but it wasn't successful. You could well have internal piles that are rupturing every bowel movement. Such a shame that you weren't able to have an examination to rule that out. Hope you get sorted

  • Thanks. Did you also have pain with the bleeding?

  • Yes I get a sharp pain. Then it throbs for about an hour! Horrendous to be honest. I've got some lidocaine cream that eases it. I also bought some off the internet xx

  • I sympathise with you. I know all about the pain of a fissure. That is why I didnt think it was the fissure causing the bleeding as I have no pain. The doctor thought so too, hence why she said, no point in examing you, and refered me to have colonosopy as she thought the problem was further up. But internal piles werent considered. I've never had piles, but guessed that pain always accompnied them?

I was diagnosed with anul fissure 30 years ago and have managed it with a high fibre diet. As you know, the looser the stools, the better, if there is a fissure or piles. If I get even slightly constipated, that can open up the fissure.

I'd like to share a tip, it may possibly help you too,if you are not already doing it. Every night I eat 1 to 3 dried figs.....this has certainly kept me free from constipation.

  • Awww Thank you.

I shall give that a try. Off to the doctors today as had bad pains for the last few days! I know she will refer me for a colonoscopy which Is why I have put off going ‍♀️!
    Take Care

  • Its best to get properly checked out though. I'm not worried about having the colonoscopy....shouldnt be too bad, me thinks. It's more the hassle of spending the previous day on the toilet emptying my bowels! I'm expecting a letter from the hospital this week, be glad when I get it done. The waiting is the hardest part.

    All the best

  • Hi Rosie62

I was recently diagnosed with an anal fissure. I'm a 31 year old male, and I was wondering whether you experience rectal bleeding as a result of your fissure. What symptoms do you have, and how do you deal with it?

    Regards
