The NHS, Hurthle Cell, A Rant

Hi I am new here and I will give you a bit of background first.

I found a lump on my neck in July 2013 and first saw the consultant back in August 2013. After several FNA, the first was Type 2 ok, the second, Type 3 unsure and the rest were type 1 not enough sample to test. My consultant decided to air on the side of caution and do a lobectomy to remove the side of the tyroid with the nodule, he was 99% sure it wasnt cancer. This was done in Oct 14 and i saw another consultation in Nov14 who said the surgery was fine and they do a check up soon.  In Jan 15 I saw my consultant who informed me the labs had found cancer but he was still awaiting a report from a regional meeting to decide what to do next. He said he would make another appointment in 2 weeks. That appointment came through for exactly 2 weeks later. He said they would complete the removal of the thyroid in 4 - 6 weeks. I had this done 3 weeks ago which was 5 weeks 6 days after the appointment. They said to wait for an appointment for the lab results. This has appointment has come through but it turns out that it is with the wrong consultant and needs to be put back again and they will make it ASAP. I hate this waiting and not knowing its really getting to me and affecting my mental health.

Im also waiting Radioactive Iodine, I have a consultation about this now in 2 wekes. However reading online RAI is only 15 - 20% sucessful for Hurthle cell, so the possible side effects are making me think is this worthwhile.

Hi chrismis ...... welcome to the forum.  My goodness you certainly have been waiting around for a long while and I can understand why you feel so worried!  I know it is Easter but could I suggest that you ring the nurses here on the site on Tuesday and go through everything with them. Their number is shown on this page (freephone) and I am sure they will be able to give you the support and advice that you so desperately need. x
