The effects of Steroids long term?

Hi

I am after any advice about prolonged steroid use.

After a variety of deep lows due to doctors neglect my husband is currently on a steroid high. Hes been on them a week and gone from not eating and sleeping most of the time to the equivalent of tigger on speed! As he has advanced cancer in the kidney, liver, lungs and lymph nodes we are on palative care and have been prescribed enough steroids to keep a dead cow going! However I am just after pointers about how they may affect his behaviour / things to be aware of. As his wife/ carer I feel I'm on edge as his behaviour can vary due to fatigue and feel forewarned is for-armed to cope.

Cheers

  • Hi and thanks for posting on the forum,

I am sorry to hear about your situation.  It can be so difficult as the carer  knowing how best to support a loved one.

Steroids are  often used in the palliative setting to help increase appetite and energy but trying to get the right dose can sometimes be tricky.  There is some information on our website about steroids which you can read about here. There is also information about potential side effects which you can read about here .

It is probably best to go and talk to your husband's GP (family doctor) about the side effects that he is getting. His doctor has access to all his medical records and is best placed to assess and review his medication.  I wonder whether you have got other support for you both. You mention palliative care.  I wonder whether you have been given a palliative care or Macmillan nurse.  If so you could give them a ring to discuss his medication.

I hope that this have helped a bit.  If you want to give us a ring to discuss any of this please do.  We are here from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    Best Wishes,

    Catherine

  • Hi Catherine

Thank you for your reply and the links-I will have a look

We have got a lovely Macmillan nurse but she was on holiday when it all happened. I'm afraid I have no faith in our GP as they failed to refer my husband: who had a   terrible cough for 9 months , for tests. We found out about the cancer after tests for something else in the end. They have also consistently failed to support since-its only the intervention of Macmillan that have ensured he now has the correct support.

Thsnk you for this forum and the support through it. It has really helped.

    Best wishes.
