terrified of ovarian cancer

I'm 17 and while I know it's rare to have ovarian cancer at my age, I'm terrified. A few weeks ago my period was strange brown discharge instead of my normal period and I haven't had a period since. I have also started urinating more frequently and have noticed today that I am less hungry/feeling full more easily. I'm not sure what to do please can anyone help

  • Hi,

I'm just replying to this to try and give you some reassurance. You are very young but are obviously very worried. These sort of symptoms can be caused by numerous things. Sometimes, anxiety can also manifest in different ways as well. I am 37, but when I was 23 I convinced myself I had breast cancer ( I found a small lump in my armpit, but turned out to be a skin type thing). Anyway, I didn't have a period for about 5 months through worry. Sometimes, I also still have missed periods etc since then. I don't have children either. Also, sometimes having a brown-ish discharge seems quite common, especially towards the end of a period. My mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer after a good few years of frequent and urgent urination issues. By this I mean she barely slept overnight, every night, and probably had to go pee about 10-15 times in a night.

Just keep an eye on your symptoms, but if you are worried, do speak to a doctor.

    All the best,

    Hayley

  • Hi Hayley,

thanks for the reassurance! I've managed to calm myself down a bit but I am still quite worried (I have health anxiety so any new symptom instantly sends me into a spiral of panic). I'm just going to keep an eye on my symptoms and I guess like you said talk to a doctor if I need to.

    Thanks for replying though :)

  • Just wondered if there's any chance of pregnancy.  No need to reply here about that though as it's completely your own private business.

Ovarian cancer is incredibly rare in someone so young. I used to miss periods or have weird periods because of polycystic ovarian syndrome. Lots of reasons it could be for menstrual disruption. Worth talking to your GP x

  • No definitely not haha! thanks for the reply though :)
