Terrified i have throat cancer. PLEASE help me x

Hello, and THANK YOU for reading this.

I am a new mum to a 9 week old baby girl and i am 30 years old. For the whole of my pregnancy i suffored terribly with heartburn. Waking up every night choking on acid then throwing up.

After i had the baby the acid continued weirdly for another 3 weeks then cleared up.

Ive had a sore throat on one side on and off for about 5 months. Unsure if that was acid related until i found a baked bean size growth next to my tonsil.

I immidiatley phoned the doctor who refferred me to ENT, i saw them today, had that horrible thin camera down my nose. He said he believes the growth was a harmless cyst and i was overjoyed. Until he said 'ooh'

I nearly poo'd a bit, i couldnt speak with this camera down my nose so i waited and waited for what felt like a whole year. He said i see a growth further down. I began sweating.

He pulled the camera out then numbed my throat with a spray and stuck his fingers all the way in to feel the back of my throat at the top. A few gags later he said it was soft. I said is that good? He said yes. If it was hard it would be bad.

He is sending me for an MRI scan just before christmas. He said if its bad he will call me but if its good i will get a letter of discharge. Ive beem crying nearly all day, googling like mad. The survival rate and convincing myself im not going to see my baby grow up.

Ive been in this situation before with a thyroid lump, i needed a thyroidectamy and it turned out it was benign.

I am a non smoker, i only have a drink when its christmas or if im stressed but i never get hammered. Im overweight. But i eat incredibly healthy now i'm on slimming world. Ive lost 7lb through dieting only (gained 2lb this week through worry and white chocolate) it doesnt hurt to swallow, or to eat or to drink. In fact it doesnt hurt at all right now.

If i had throat cancer would my throat be sore all the time? Is that what presistant means? Would it hurt to swallow food? Because i eat like a horse with no trouble.

Id truly appreciate any help anyone can give me. Im keeping this to myself as i dont want to worry my family at christmas time.

Thank you so much x

  • Hello

I'm so sorry to hear about this health problem that you're dealing with, particularly at a time when you should be enjoying time with your new baby.

It's understandable that you're feeling concerned about things and I think most of our members here will know how difficult this period of uncertainty and not knowing can be. It's natural to feel worried. I'd certainly suggest giving Google a wide berth. You won't find answers but it will lead to you feeling more anxious about things.

I wonder if you might find it helpful to give our team of nurses a call. I'm sure that having a chat with then they would offer some advice and reassurance whilst you're waiting for your next appointment. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
