Swollen lymph nodes in neck

16 Nov 2021 10:44

I've been following these forums for a while, but this is my first time posting. I found a swollen cervival lymph node approximately 6 months ago, on the left side of my neck. I kept an eye on it but I was too scared to go to the doctors, which I know is ridiculous, but I have anxiety and I suppose I just wanted to block it out. It's about the size of a pea at its biggest. It hasn't got any bigger, if anything it sometimes feels smaller and fluctuates in size, however a few more small one's have now popped up. Also the lymph nodes under my jaw are now quite swollen and tender. I did have covid about a month ago, and I've only noticed these new ones since then, however they are still there and now I'm worried sick.

I've just seen the doctor, who had a feel and has referred me for an ultrasound and also a chest X-ray as a precaution. I knew he was going to do this, from reading all of your posts on here, however as soon as he did I broke down, as it made it feel so real. I know that's the only way to find out, but I have convinced myself that it's something serious and I can't ignore it anymore. I'm just so scared. I don't know what I'm looking for really, but I know many people on here have had similar experiences. If anyone would like to share their experience or if you're going through the same right now, then maybe we can support eachother. Thanks for reading.

Sometimes swollen lymph nodes can be from infection and other many causes, I have swollen lymph node right now and I'm in the same boat as you let me know how you get on

Thanks for your reply Natalie. Sorry to hear you are going through the same. Yes, I really hope that it is just from an infection. If it was someone else, I'd think logically and say the chances of it being serious are really small, but when it's myself I automatically jump to the worst conclusion. Are you also waiting for tests?

Yup I always think the worst thing possible in every situation.. and I've had blood tests my CRP is high so I've had bloods done again today to see if they are high still. I've been referred to the breast clinic as I have a small lump in my breast I'm hoping it's just acne as I have body acne and get it under the skin, I've woke up with my left neck swollen lymph node CRP levels can be high due to infection which I think I have it's just horrible having a waiting game

Take care xx

Aww, I'm so sorry to hear you're going through that. The waiting game is horrible. I haven't had any blood tests, so no idea what is going on. I don't have a temperature or anything to indicate infection, but haven't felt 100% since I had covid.

Yes, it seems very likely that yours could be down to infection or acne. My best friend had a lump in her breast and it was all absolutely fine. I was so good at reassuring her and I was certain it would be something minor like a cyst, which it was. I wish I could reassure myself like that too. Good luck and please keep me updated. Xx

Just an update in case anyone comes across this post. I will keep updating, as I know this forum has helped me so much and its always good to hear the final outcome, either way.

So, I called the hospital and I'm booked in for a chest x-ray in a few weeks. However, the ultrasound of my neck is going to be at least 16 weeks! So I have called a private hospital and I'm going to have my scan done there to speed things up.

I checked my notes from the GP on my online records and the GP is concerned and put the referral through as URGENT. However, there is also a comment stating 'doesn't appear to meet the 2ww criteria.' So although this is a good sign that the GP hasn't put it through as the two week referral, during my appointment he was concerned and said he wanted it done urgently. So on the one hand I'm thinking I should just wait as the GP can't be that concerned, but on the other hand, there is no way I can wait 16 weeks with this worry. So the cost of the scan will be worth it, even if just to save me 16 weeks of worry and give me some answers. Apparently I'll get the scan results there and then. X

Hi, I am also playing the waiting game for a swollen lymph node diagnoses. My lump is in the right side of my neck and has been present for around 6/7 moths but getting bigger.

I had a GP referral (non urgent) for an ultrasound which happened just over a week ago. The Dr took two biopsies and said that my results would be fastracked and the the hospital would be taking over my care.

I have an appointment with the haematology consultant on the 24th and the wait is really starting to get me down. I'm trying to stay busy and distract myself but it's tricky at times.

Sending you strength and support xxx

I'm so sorry that you're going through this too. The wait is so horrible. It is on my mind constantly 24/7.

I'm glad you've had your scan and I really hope you get the all clear as soon as possible.

I have my private scan on Tuesday, then my chest xray with the NHS the following Monday. Since I've gone private with my scan, if they do need to biopsy then it'll be referred back to the NHS. I'm hoping they won't need to, but can't help thinking the worst.

Did they give you any indication of why they did a biopsy? Did it look abnormal or was it a precaution because it is growing?

Please let me know how you get on and I wish you the best of luck. Always here if you need to talk as I know how scared you must be right now xxx

Hey Sallx,

I thought I was just going in for a scan but the doctor decided to take two biopsies on the spot. As it was all a bit of a shock I'm not sure I even asked why it was happening! Laugh

I remember her saying it was a very enlarged lymph node with no obvious reason of infection. Other than that I'm not really sure.

I wish I had asked! She was so lovely too and kept asking me if I had any questions but I just wasn't particularly focused at the time!

I really hope you get some good news on Tuesday and from the following Monday appointment too.

Please keep us posted and I'll keep everything crossed for you xxx

Ahh that's completely understandable. It's easy to think of questions before and after, but at the time your mind goes blank. Let's hope it was just a precaution and you get some good news at your appointment soon. You've already been waiting over a week, it must feel like forever.

Thank you so much. I will keep you updated and I've got my fingers crossed for you too. Xxx

I've just got back from my ultrasound which went really well. There were quite a few swollen lymph nodes, but the doctor said they look reactive and he isn't at all concerned.

This morning I felt more and quite near my collarbone aswell, so I really have spent the day convinced that it's bad and expecting the worst. I know I'll still be nervous about my chest xray next week, but hopefully that's clear too.

Good luck tomorrow. I'll be thinking of you and hope you get some amazing news. Please let me know how it goes xxx

Ahh that's amazing news! I'm so happy for you

I'm sure the xray is still playing on your mind but brilliant that this first hurdle is done and with a positive outcome

My little girl has just tested positive for Covid this morning so I can't attend my appointment tomorrow

I phoned the hospital number they gave me and they have said that the consultant and clinical specialist nurse will phone me tomorrow instead. I'm so relieved as I thought I'd have to wait another fortnight!

Fingers crossed
