Swollen lymph nodes but clear blood tests

Hi everyone i hope someones able to help me and i just need someone to talk to.

Im 22 year old female and have swollen lymph nodes, i have 2 on my right side in my groin, 1 on the left side of my groin and 1 on the left side above my collar bone.

I went to the doctors yesterday and she said they are swollen lymph nodes but thinks the one in my groin on the left could be an infected hair follical so she perscribed me some broad antibioctics and took some blood.

The doctor messaged me this morning to say my bloods are normal but im concerned because if it is an infected hair folical surely my white blood cell count would be elevated. I have tried phoning the doctors this morning but they are only taking emergancy phone calls and the next routine one wouldnt be until thursday next week. But i just wanted to ask some questions like if my white blood cell count is normal then do i need to keep taking the antibiotics? She has made an appointment for a phone call review in 2 weeks time.

Apart from my lynoh nodes being swollen i am also fatigued and kinda brushed it off as being tired from chasing my 1 uear old around and ive been losing weight. I started doing regular exercise 5 days a week a month or 2 ago but found i was loosing more weight quicker than i thought so 2 weeks ago i reduced my exercise and now to it 2 times a week and started eating more to try and get my weight up but im still loosing weight. Obviously im worried silly about the C word and would have been much more relaxed if my white blood cell count was elevated.

Sorry for the long post my anxiety is through the roof and just need someone to talk to.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

    I am sorry to hear you have some swollen lymph nodes that are worrying you. It is good to hear you have seen your GP and now because they suspected an infected hair follicle they prescribed you some antibiotics and took a blood test.

    It is reasurring to hear the doctor let you know that the blood tests came back normal. You shouldn't stop taking a course of antibiotics unless directed by your own doctor so do continue these for now. You are wondering if your white cells are normal does this mean you don't have an infection. I think it is fair to say that white blood counts won't always be raised during an infection but your inflammatory markers may be and if this is the case antibiotics can help to reduce any swelling and inflammation as well as clearing up infection.

    It sounds like the doctor has arranged to call you again in 2 weeks time to see how you are and to check how the lumps are. Hopefully by then things will have settled but if not the doctor may want to arrange some more tests like an ultrasound to check them out further.

    Cancer at your age is rare so there is much more likely to be another reason for these to be swollen so try not to oer think the situation for now. Do get back in touch if you need to and if you ever want to talk things through over the phone call our helpline on 0808 800 4040 the nurses are here Mon-Fri 9am till 5pm.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Hi thank you for replying just a little update;

    The doctor called me back on monday and my swollen lymph nodes havent gone down at all but i had a new one appear above my right collar bone. Im going for an ultrasound scan on the 17th September so its just a waiting game at the moment. Struggling to ease my mind about it all but not getting stressed or too worried over it. Im still tired all the time have been since before i found the swollen nodes in my groin a month + ago now and im still loosing weight without trying to so far i have lost 9.4lbs in just over 2 months. I did originally weight 9st 7.8lbs and now i weight 8st 12.4lb.

    Im not sure if anyone is there or will read this but it eases my mind a little i guess.

  • Hi.

    It's good that they are looking into this further. I have just finished treatment for lymphoma after 9 months of going backwards and forward to my gp.  It's good that your bloods are normal however this shouldn't stop further investigations being done.

    Please try not to worry and if it turns out to be lymphoma it has a very good success rate :). I was 27 when diagnosed x

  • Thank you for replying. Im so sorry you got diagnosed with lymphoma but I'm pleased for you that you have finished treatment. Hope you are well now. Can I ask what symptoms you had? X

  • I had shortness of breath, heart palpitations and a very dry cough. I also had pains down my arms and in my back which felt like trapped nerve pain. Later down the line I also lost weight without trying too. Initially after my blood work coming back abnormal, I was referred to a rheumatologist as my GP thought I had an autoimmune condition. Thankfully he sent me for a chest xray which picked up a 10cm mass in my chest.

    Please try not to worry, I know this is the worst part waiting for answers but if it is lymphoma, it's got a very good cure rate and there are many different treatment options available  .

    Although my bloods where abnormal , many others who I have contacted with through a lymphoma support group on facebook have came back fine so this isn't a very good indicator for lymphoma.

  • Oh I'm sorry you went through all that and that it took 9 months it must have been awful and scary for you. Im glad they sent you for an xray and picked up that mass. Hopefully the answers don't take too long after the ultrasound me and my partner are wanting to start trying for baby number 2 in October and would like to know whats wrong or if its normal before we start x

  • Hi everyone just thought id post a little update;

    I spoke to a doctor today because i found some more swollen lymph nodes, one in my right armpit and in my left groin area.

    They have put an urgent refferal through to see a hematologist. They called me back not long after speaking and i have an appointment this wednesday at 9:00.

    What could i expect at the appointment?

  • Another update;

    Been to see a hematologist consultant who is sending me for a ct scan and biopsy to check for and hopefully rule out hodgkin lymphoma because it is common in my age group and with all the other symptoms i have been having. So hopefully i will receive the appointment letter in the next couple weeks. They took some more blood and are testing it for multiple things. Im still losing weight without trying to currently lost 10lbs in just under 3 months which the consultant was worried about because im quite slim as it is.

  • Did You ever hear back about the results?

  • Hi Sillygoose,

    I hope you're ok? I've been reading through your post and I've had similar issues and just wondered if you have any update on your situation at all please?

    Hope all is ok.
