Swelling post lymph removal

Is there anything a patient can do regarding swelling post lymph removal? I am almost 2 weeks post double mastectomy and removal of 21 lymph nodes (14 in left and 7 in right). Surgical scar looks amazing and love the flat look, but I am growing painful new boobs under the scar without wanting them. The pain is mostly associated with the nerve involvement from under left arm to my elbow which was intense when removing drains. The swelling is increasing pain and the right is increasing every day.

How can I reduce this swelling without taking anti-inflammatories which my kidney and liver react badly to due to previous major horse riding accident? I did not expect the swelling to be as bad, will it ease or continue to worsen?

  • You need to contact your nurse, and take it from there. Swelling shouldn't be getting worse 2 weeks later. Pain, i dunno because nerves can become more sensitive as sensation returns to them. But pain and increasing swelling 2 weeks later needs to be looked at by a pair of trained eyes.

    You need infection ruled out.

  • Thank you. It is certainly a problem with both my GP and my surgeon heading off for holidays. I have since had infection ruled out as I visited a hospital to be checked. They think it is lymphodema but the soonest appointment is another 2 weeks with my physio.

  • Hi l had a lymph node removed from under my arm and it leaked for weeks, it started leaking after 5 days clear fluid. I had to keep changing the dressing frequently for 4/5 weeks.
Your swelling sounds uncomfortable and as it's increasing maybe you should see the nurse at your surgery, they may be able to drain the fluid for you. Or get you seen at breast clinic.
l hope you have some effective pain relief, you have had a big operation that will take a while to heal.
    take care

  • Hi Managingit,

I am sorry to hear that you are still uncomfortable after your bilateral mastectomy. With your GP and your consultant on holiday, the best thing to do is to contact your breast care nurse. I had fluid build up after my double mastectomy too. They try to leave it to settle with time, but if it is very painful, the nurse can aspirate the fluid, which brings instantaneous relief.

Please let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello manageinit

I had auxiliary node clearance aug 22 renoving 30 nodes after my drains were taken out I too had fluid build up I had what they call a Seroma this can be drained but some consultants preferred to leave it as by draining can cause infection it was uncomfortable but I choose to leave it and not chance infection but it took around 3 months for nature to do its thing and fully settle down

    good luck love Lara Heart

  • Hello Managingit and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you have run into this swelling problem after your surgery and apologise that we weren't able to get back to you sooner.

I expect by now you have managed to get hold of someone from your hospital care team, hopefully, the breast care nurse if the surgeon is still on leave. I am glad an infection has been ruled out.

Lara mentioned a seroma which is a collection of fluid and isn't the same as lymphoedema, I am wondering if this swelling might be a seroma too. The charity Breast Cancer Now explains it here.   Seromas can sometimes be drained.

I do hope you have been able to get some advice from your own surgical team and that things improve for you soon.

Please give us a call if you want to talk anything through. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9-5 weekdays.

    Best wishes,

    Julia

  • Thank you Julia. As I can't drive and live alone and in a country town breast care nurses are only available by phone. I finally got a call back yesterday and the nurse put my fears at rest. She said it would most likely be seromas too which was a relief as I was concerned it would be a lifelong battle to control if it was lymphoedema.
I had one seroma drained with the surgeon around 10 days post op before surgeon left for her holiday. I sat up and down flopped a far bigger seroma. Surgeon simply shrugged which was a shame as that one was far more painful than the one she drained.
Non specialist doctors will not drain my seromas though. Have had full neck to butt elastic pressure tube and positioned bed with top raised since hospital. I have since got elastic  tubes for forearms. Just started gentle oil massage to spread seromas.

It all helps but I have 2 larger seromas and swelling widely spread from just below neck to midriff and underarm to both elbows. It is far less painful than hard lumps that looked and felt like boobs but skewed toward armpits ( where tubes could not reach).
Thabks for your reply and hopefully your reply can help others too.
