Supporting my partner through chemotherapy

What are my rights with regard to having regular time away from full time work (unpaid) to support my partner over 6 months of chemotherapy?

  • Hi Paws.

Don't think there is anything at all it up to where you work, and weather they are simpathetic to you or not,

Remember you don't know if your partner will nead any help or not yet, some people work while having chemo some can't.

Know I'm not much help but each chemo can be different with different people, could be telling your boss exactly what's going on and say you might need bit of time off (unpaid) to help your partner but you don't know yet, it's one of those areas where nothing is legally sorted because everyone is different.

    Hope side effects are minimal.

    Good luck with there treatment.

  • Thank you. I think my head possibly had fallen into doom and panic mode.I am sure that is normal. My 'what if' brain is whirling around in my head and I am, quite frankly, terrified. This has all happened so quickly and it feels like our world is upside down.  I just assumed everyone was really sick with chemo. It's good to know that might not be so for him. It will be good for him to be able to maintain his independence and feel more in control of life through his treatment. Being able to drive I assumed would not be an option for him but hopefully he will be able to do normal life a bit more than expected..With my work I can only talk to my employer and hope for the support as I need it. Thank you for taking time to reply. I appreciate it. x Fingers crossed

  • When i had chemo (docetaxel) every three weeks, drove myself there and back, Not to first session because didn't know what I'd be like. But straight to work next day (metal fabrication and welding plenty of muck and lifting) was OK for about a week then it hit me was ill for about five days then back to work again, kept on like that though treatment, when i was at home looked after myself and my disabled wife. Bit of a struggle though we managed.

I have stumack problems being sick alot so no good going to work till it cleared up, boss was very understanding.

    Hope things go well.
