Subungual melanoma-in-situ of the index finger

I was eventually diagnosed with a subungual melanoma-in-situ after 2 biopsies and a partial amputation in April of last year.

I saw a very well known Skin Cancer Consultant and on the day of my operation I asked that he take as much of my index finger away as was necessary to give a good clear margin.  This he did not do and consequently I still have Melanoma-in-situ which means that although I manage to put this at the back of my mind as much as possible, it is still there and I will never know whether it is going to become a full blown melanoma. It is like walking on a tight rope (I also had D.C.I.S. breast cancer in 1992 - so I am a survivor!!)  I have to see my Consultant every 6 months at the moment - in fact I have chosen to see my Dermatologist, as he performed the first biopsy at which time he thought it was a melanoma-in-situ, so I have every faith in him rather than the Consultant who I feel has let me down badly.  It would be great to be in touch with someone who has been through something similar as I know it is very rare.

  • Hi Felicity,

Has the Consultant explained why he decided to ignore your clearly expressed wishes? If there wasn't a good reason, or if he hasn't communicated with you and received your consent to deviate from an agreed care plan, you have grounds to raise a formal complaint.

Everyone in the NHS is supposed to adhere to the principle of "no decision about me without me".

    Best wishes

    Dave
