Subungual Melanoma

I have a malignant melanoma in the nail area of my 4th Toe, I have to see the surgeon on Monday to discuss treatment. I have already discussed it with a specialist nurse and probably my toe will be amputated.

Needless to say i am scared stiff, my main concern is that if it has spread to my foot I will wake up without my foot, I have had this for at least 10 maths.

Has anyone any advice on what to expect after surgery.

  • Hi,

I'm sorry you have this worry about your diagnosis & treatment. I don't have personal experience of subungual melanoma as mine is superficial spreading melanoma of the skin. However, there are a couple of members who have had a SM diagnosis and their posts are really helpful. You will find them here www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../subungual-melanoma-1

    and www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../louiseandfin

Please don't worry about losing your foot, this wouldn't happen. Your toe may need to be amputated but, if the melanoma has spread, it would spread through the lymphatic system to the nearest lymph nodes. In these cases the nodes would be removed. My melanoma was a mole on my shin. It spread to the lymph node in my groin and to one in my pelvis & these were removed.

I hope this helps. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient)

  • Hi Angie

Thank you for your reply. Show can I get my post on the forum where the other SM posts are?.

There may be someone there who has had a toe removed.
