Stress and cancer

Stress and Cancer

I have researched extensively about the impact of psychological, emotional stress impact on the development of cancer. It seems that many people want to know how they got cancer and I feel that the internet offers various  reasons that seem unproven. Some reasons seem bizarre. You would have to avoid doing anything basically. Anything goes theory!

Most scientific research of 100,000’s of people appears to disprove this theory of Stress – Cancer link.  The only link found was a slight increase in a few types of cancer linked to immune dysfunction and some viruses, but they are very specific cancers. Another reason people link stress is the real possibility that some people take up smoking etc.

Post-traumatic stress, bereavement, loss, etc. – had little impact on the cases of cancer over the decades.

Another fact is that some people seem to recall a stressful event of Months or a few years ago, that they feel caused cancer. The fact is that most cancers do not develop until mutational developments have taken a step wise progression to the point where cancer can develop and this can take many many Years if not decades.

My logical side has to say that little proof is seen in the stress theory. It’s enough dealing with stress during cancer. If stress causes cancer, then you would argue that cancer patients would get another cancer and their carers would get cancer--- the list goes on.

I just think it is dangerous to claim something is true without evidence. Mind you, less stress is good in so many ways.

  • This is a very interesting topic hampshire1 and you are right - it's good to try and reduce the stress levels in our daily lives but luckily there is no evidence that it affects our cancer risk.

We have some more information on this here for anyone who is interested in reading more about it.

I hope everyone feels less stressed about it after reading this :D
