Hi all , just a few questions, dont no if any one had a pleural effusion ? My dad had 7 ltrs took away and was told there was rogue cancer cells in the fluid, hes had numerous ct scans, as was told could be metastic cancer , all ct scans was clear ,ultra sounds clear , bronschope was clear , and now off for pet scan in next few days, we are on week 7 next week , firstly he was told asbestosis, then copd, hes fit and healthy and 69, went back yesterday and docs said still cancer even tho no tumours , they are going to start chemo after pet scan regardless if anything is found, dad asked a few questions one being , he had the fluid removed in 3 stages as a lot was present, and they didn’t want the lung too collapse , he asked if the fluid was found in all samples, or first , second or 3rd, his reply was they wasn’t abliged too tell him ? So he has asked for another sample to be taken , if its metastic its not cureable but hopefully he can have treatment, we seem to have gone on 6 almost 7 weeks worrying and his mental health is terrible, may i also say his bloods are clear as is the organs nothing has detected a tumour x

  • Hello Lazydays, so sorry your dad is going through all this and still no definite answers.  I really can't understand why the docs should say they are 'not obliged to to tell him' in which sample the problem was found, seems an unusual thing to say and I would be inclined to question that statement.  Maybe you could contact the nurses on this forum for more advice - they can be found on the drop-down menu under 'ask the nurses'.  Good luck.

We all have to be patient at the beginning of this 'journey', which is far from easy, but it's good that he is having all the tests available - fingers crossed the Pet scan will get to the root of the problem.  Having had one myself I know that this scan seems to be a lot more in depth than other scans.

Thinking of you and your dad, God bless.

    Hazel x
