Steps to move relative into a hospice

Hello

My mum was diagnosed with cervical cancer last year. Despite being positive about the outlook and optimism about tbe treatment and chances of recovery, her condition has rapidly deteriorated.

In late spring she was given a year to live but that looks extremely unlikely now. She is extremely frail, not eating or sleeping well and is struggling with the small amounts of physical activity she is doing.

It has got to the point that my dad is saying that he is struggling to care for her in tbe condition that she is in and communication can be difficult with her due to her mental state.

He suggested some weeks ago that it may be time to consider moving her into a hospice where she can receive the type of specialist care she requires and is missing out on at home.

Can anyone offer any advice on what this process is like and what steps would have to be taken to do this? Is there any assessment to be carried out to decide whether this is the best thing?

She is very stubborn and we feel that she may not want this for herself but ultimately we feel that it's not good for her quality of life to remain at home with her condition rapidly deterioarating.

Very grateful for any advice.

Thanks

    Hi Nlogax,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am so sorry to hear about the situation you are in with your mum. What sort of support is your dad getting to look after your mum at home? We had carers coming in 4 times a day when my mother-in-law was ill and my father-in-law was struggling to care for her at home.

Demand can be high for hospice places and it can be difficult to get in. You will need the help of her care team or GP/practice nurse to get her in. It might also be worth discussing Power of Attorney and DNR with her care team too if her mental state is deteriorating.

Plase keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
