STEM cell therapy for High grade NHL

Hi,

We have recently found out my father has to have STEM cell therapy for his NHL. He had RCHOP and relapsed about a week after last round of chemo, he has recently completed Gemcitabine and is due a scan next week, however his consultant even before having the scan has told him he wants my father to have STEM cell. My father is worried deep down but trying to be brave. I believe he is having it as a preventative measure rather than he hasn't responded to chemo. Although he relapsed after RCHOP he did respond well and to Gemcitabine. The consultant even said the lump in his groin had gone down more than what they had expected it to. Basically what I'm really wondering is how many people in the UK  have stem cell for NHL. I can't find anything online and my father is concerned they are doing it because he's not responding very well. I'm trying to convince otherwise but I understand as he is the one going through it he's naturally going to be concerned .

Thank you.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat MickeyMouse.

I'm glad your dad has been responding well to the Gemcitabine although I'm sorry for the worry stem cell therapy is causing. We have some general information about this treatment on our website just here but it may be worth having a chat with our cancer nurses if you'd like to get an idea of how many people have stem cell therapy as part of their treatment for NHL. You can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. It may be worth getting in touch with Lymphoma Action as well.

We'll be hoping the scan next week shows good results MickeyMouse.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi there

Thank you for your reply. He has been in and met the team today for the STEM cell, my father feels better after speaking to them however he may be in over the Xmas holidays which is upsetting. However understand that what hes having done is more important.  Hes had his initial blood tests and he got a call back to say they were ok and they are going to start his harvesting next Tuesday. Like everyone here, I just hate cancer with a passion.

    Kind regards
