Stage IV Ovarian Cancer

Hi, I was diagnosed in November 2015 with stage IVb ovarian cancer. I had 4 chemo's, followed by debulking surgery then another two chemo's. I had my scan in June that showed no evidence of disease. I am now having 12 rounds of Avastin. I feel really well, but I am really worried by the statistics of stage IV ovarian cancer. Would love to speak to anyone who has ovarian cancer.

  • Welcome to the forum Ali.

It sounds like you've been on a long journey but I'm so glad that you made it through and are feeling well again :)

I've had a look through our forum and found that our lovely member [@haze44] has also had ovarian cancer. Now that I've tagged her in this post I'm sure she will be along soon to say hello and tell you about her experiences.

Also, if you want to talk to someone about the statistics you can always give our nurses a call. They are specialist cancer nurses and are available between Monday - Friday, 9a.m - 5p.m on the following freephone number: 0808 800 4040.

    I hope this helps.

    Best Wishes,

  • You're very welcome Ali.

If there is anything else I can help you with just let me know :)

    All the best,

  • Hello Ali, and welcome.  (Thank you, Steph!).

Good to hear that your last scan was clear and that you are feeling well, that's great.  If you click on my avatar you will be able to read my profile.  When first diagnosed, I was in a very, very dark place indeed, because like you I found that the prognosis for ovarian is not the best.  However, 4 years on, I am still here and feeling okay at the moment.   I am no longer in that dark place, but I am still always aware of those statistics - I just try not to ponder on them too much and get on with life.  My advice would be to not think about it too much because that just spoils what you have at the moment - just do your normal things and rejoice that you are feeling so well.

It looks as though you are getting good treatment with the Avastin, Ali.  I didn't have that, but having read about it on the CR site it seems to have some of the same side effects as some chemo's so hope you get through the course without too many problems!

Keep us posted, chin up darling.

    Hugs, Hazel xx

  • Hi Haze44, thank you for your message, I have read your profile. Well done to you for coming through all you've been through, and having such a positive attitude. I know that I shouldn't read the Internet, my oncologist has told me that a lot of the statistics are years out of date, and that treatments have improved over time, but it doesn't stop you from worrying. I do have a really positive attitude, I had a full hysterectomy, omentum, spleen, appendix and lymph nodes removed. My surgery went well.

The Avastin treatment is fine, I don't have any side effects from it, which is good. I'm off for my third treatment on Friday, I do worry about my CA125, which is down to 35 now, it's coming down very slowly, but at least it's going down.

Thank you again for your kind words and advice, onwards and upwards. xx

  • Hi Ali, no, of course you don't stop worrying, I don't think any of us ever really stops  worrying but it gets a bit easier after a few years.

It's good that your 125 is coming down, I think by the end of your treatment it will be well within the parameters. As you say, onwards and upwards, please keep in touch.

Take care, sending hugs, Hazel xx

  • Hi Hazel,

Thank you. I will keep in touch. Big hugs to you too. xx
