Squamous cancer of the tonsil

Hi new to this so don’t know where to start.

Briefly 10weeks in Spain spent biking 1101kms never felt fitter to be floored in our return with the above diagnosis.

Felt a swollen gland but no sore throat no weight loss no nightbsweats no nothing so just carried on having a good time ,slappingbthe factor 30 on didn't want skin cancer ironic now.

Day we returned home got drs appointment lump in neck an being 61 helped ! Next thing don’t panic putting you in 14 day cancer pathway programme , to where I am today 2 consultations one ct scan clear one mri scan scary and  Tuesday this week biopsy under general and appointment through at a cancer centre for Monday.!!! The NHS wheels  certainly set in motion .

Briefly  stopped smoking 2003 after tonsillitis then quinsies severe mis diagnosis but had then lanced Andy that was that or so I never though  years later the be hit with above

Stopped drinking 2009 never drunk much just couldn’t cope with hangover someasier to drink water or soda water which I understand along with my nutri bullet will be my best friend.

what do I want to know everything and nothing have read the fabulous blog by gamma ray Gary a true inspiration .In the words of Freddie Mercury I want to ride my bicycle I want to ride my bike  Think  I may have to settle for watching the Tour de France whilst having whatever treatment the powers that be decide upon

Hope someone is out there and look forward or not as the case may be to exchanging story’s and tips.

  • As I noticed this your first post with us I just wanted to stop by and welcome you to the forum, RadioactiveRaz.

I'm sorry to hear that you got diagnosed with cancer and I hope you will meet others here who will understand what you are going through at the moment as chatting to those who can relate does seem to help.

You mentioned you had a few tests coming up. Once you know more come back and give us an update. We're thinking of you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi there and welcome to the forum - hopefully you’ll find support here and some invaluable tips to get you through this tough time. My hysband was diagnosed with SCC tonsils with lymph node mets in December 2015 and like you was fit and healthy - he’d run 50 miles that week. The only symptom he’d had was a  lump in his neck that wouldnt go away.

You already sound a positive person and that youre ready to take on any thing this throws at you and thats a great attitude to have.

I see youve already read Gammaray Garys blig but if you have any questions or want to know any tips then ask away.

There is light at the end of the tunnel and my hubby has been in remission for 2 years now and we are definitely looking to the future.

    All the best xxx

  • Hi Renata

thank you , yes has m d t meeting yesterday 9 of us in the room felt quite special in a sad way. Surprising how the hospital speak soon so take some over your life

Biopsy yes confirmed cancer in right tonsil one big lymph node side of neck one smaller above it cantbfeel that one and possible one behind tonsil

if that’s also for cells in in won’t operate will be radiation and chemotherapy which is fine have a fair understanding of how painful long and bad it will be.

Today dental institute, long day am shattered but at least a bit of good news my teeth are able to,cope with the treatment. Knew eventually paying a fortune every 3 months s woulda pay off !! Habsburg today

for pet ct scan in Monday 2 July at 0800 tomsee if baby lymph is positive which they seemed to think it it.

cant get over how the little things tire me out just crawled out if shower and am shattered.

ghink a big learning curve is coming my way.

all the best to you and your hubby and look forward to getting some good tips.

yes found Gamma rays blog scary but keep dipping into it

pet can t scan Monday to check that the 3 lymph nodes are definatly cancer  before radiation chemotherapy starts in earnest. But the MDT tram semtbpretty confident someone is out of way not easy to,operate on so chemo radiation looks like the way

thank you for your kind words

  • Hi there and thanks for the reply

My hubby had a tonsillectomy, multiple biopsies to check for the primary then chemoradiation. He had 5 cycles of cistplatin chemo and 30 fractions of VMAT radiotherapy concurrently for a 6 week period. Unfortunately his post chemoradiation OET scan showed he still had active tumour in his lymphnodes so he tgen had a neck dissection. The traatment took from Feb till July so was quite gruelling but worth it. Any questions feel free to ask.

Goid luck with the PET scan xx

    best wishes

ps you were lucky with the dentist my hubby had 4 teeth removed - 1 was filled but the other 3 were healthy

  • Hi Emma

thank you for your honest reply. Think I will be taking lots of deep breathes Yoga breathing through the next weeks talking about 7 weeks mon -Friday with 3 chemo days will find out 10:July exact nature of treatment .

look forward to exchanging tips and comments with you.

yep re dentist finally paying for 3monthly check ups for 20years seems to have paid off think if they said extraction I would have folded into pieces. Was bad enough being in a room with 12other dentist chairs and no privacy everyone knew my business likewise I theirs !

    take care

  • Hi Hazel

The news that he needed the teeth extracted tipoed us over the edge as hes always been so careful - it was weird because we’d beennreally strong but that really affected us - not only did he have cancer, had to have surgery , chemo and radiotherapy they wanted his teeth too !

    Here to chat anytime xx

    best wishes

  • Hi Emma

that was my biggest fear yesterday ,surrounded by people who didn’t look after their teeth demanding that they had one took out and I was trying to get to grips with what was happening. Really think cancer consultant should have  have been in a private room .

onwards to today routine Mamagram so think I spoilt the nurses day when I got asked the question anything changed in your medical history ! So the floodgates opened and I ended up comforting the nurse. .

then 2 telephone calls Tuesday next week consultant and mask fitting. Dare I ask how scary was that !

Wednesdaay meet the radiotherapy chemotherapy team ,

presume you were both working ?  If so don’t know how you did it !

did your husband feel tired all the time just been to supermarket and struggled to push the trolley so gone from biking 30-50 Kms a day to nothing. luckily  we’ve both taken retirement ,no pension for me until 66 but live tomwhats coming in .been prudent and was looking forward to extended trips abroad. So much so that last month we’ve taken a year lease in an apartment in Spain dont ask ! Nit even thinking when we might get out to it but our daughter using it for 3 weeks in school holiday. .

tahts me done off for old person nap ,ps struggling to sleep in night

    kind wishes

  • Hi Hazel

hope you enjoyed your nap Sounds like you are following the same plan as Paul regarding youre treatment. We found ourselves breaking down at the most in appropriate times and I have to say Cancer was everywhere on the telly, the news, adverts etc  - there was no escape !

Paul has his own buisness and I was lucky enough not to have to work - Im a nurse so he had his own personal nurse to get him through. Paul wasnt able to have any sick time so he worked all the way through - we set up an office from home so he could work from there.

If you message me then we can chat properly if you would like to and I can give you some handy tiips on how to get through if you’d like me to.

    best wishes

  • Hi Emma

Paul sounds very lucky to have you . I have hubby John nursing skills none tact not a lot but trying be you hard .

Think men are always difficult in such situations all he keeps saying it should be him and not me.

Nap didn’t really happen as this morning when radiation appointments rang I had a melt down in phone  so she passed my number in to patients services and a really nice lady rung me back by that time I was in full working mode Imuses to be a business travel manager so put best ohine voice and demeanour on but I was feeling ok .She has arranged for someone from her team to be with me at mask fitting on Tuesday .

re messaging you for a chat brain not in gear nit sure if we can do private chats enlighten me please. Tomorrow will be fine or anytime after just got in from picking grandson up and feel shattered.

    Best wishes
