Sonographer says nothing!

Hi all, I'm mid way through breast cancer treatment, but have been having a lot of abdominal pain and discomfort. My GP urgently referred me for a pelvic ultrasound to 'rule out' ovarian cancer, and I had it this morning. It was an abdominal ultrasound followed by a transvaginal ultrasound.

I could see at one point that she was measuring what looked like a black mass on the screen, but I didn't ask her what it was. She pretty much did the whole process without saying anything positive or negative at all. When I had my breast ultrasound earlier in the year I remember the radiologist saying he didn't think there was anything to worry about but he'd biopsy just in case (he was wrong!!). But this got me thinking. If there is nothing abnormal showing up on an ultrasound surely the sonographer would say so ? Given that today's lady said nothing at all aside from the fact that my GP would have my results within 7 days, I'm now worrying that something is actually wrong in my pelvis. Has anyone else had a sonographer say nothing at all positive but had a good outcome anyway ?

I'm driving myself up the wall with this.

  • I had an ultrasound and a transvaginal scan last wk after suffering pain in my left ovary.

The sonographer didn’t say much until I asked if anything had shown.

A cyst like mass is showing on my left ovary  apparently it’s solid with fluid around the edge.

Thinks it’s an endometriomas but after speaking to my GP today he said it needs further evaluation to rule out other possible causes.

  • Hi Marie, sorry to hear that, although hopefully all will be well with you, fingers crossed. Did you know you might have endometriosis at any point before now ? I'm kicking myself that I didn't ask her whether she saw anything troubling. I definitely saw her measuring a large black spot tho. Of course my husband is saying 'why didn't you ask for goodness sake??' Well I don't know. Wish I had now. This'll be a long 7 days.....

  • I’ve suffered with endometriosis for 13 yrs but different from the pain I have been experiencing on my left ovary.

i guess I’ll have to see what my gynaecologist says on Thursday.

I was expecting the sonographer to say I’d have to wait for the report to go back to my GP but she was quite willing to tell me what she had seen. I wish I had asked how big it was.

hope you get ur results soon and they are good news x

  • You may find your results are in sooner. The sonographer told me she was writing the report as soon as I left and it would be with Dr the next morning x

  • Hi.

I know it's been a while and hoping all is well... but I'm going through the same situation now.. how was your outcome ?. Good news?..

My sonographer just said to make a routine appointment with my gp which I have. Now just waiting..

  • I know i'm a year late and you probably have had your results and I hope all is well.

But I think you need to be educated on sonographers. They are not doctors, they are trained specialist that are able to read ultrasound images. Their role consist of performing a scan and forming a comprehendible report which will go back to the referrer. They are often put under a lot of stress, and have to see up to 12- 18 patients in a day, sometimes more, sometimes less. They only have 20 minute for each scan and are often under a lot of pressure not to miss anything- thats why they dont speak during your scan. Often if you are having an medical procedure and the doctor is required to concentrate, you wouldn't disturb them would you?!

so why do you expect this sonographer to talk to you through the scan.

As for the results, her role is to relay it back to the referrer and it is the referrer job to explain the results to you and answer your questions.

You are more than welcome to ask the sonographer if everything is okay after the scan, and many of them would tell you. However if they do not, trust that they will need to look over the images in order to be sure about something and they will send a report to your GP, just like they are suppose to do.

If it helps, if there is anything sinister, you would most likely be seen much sooner by your GP than 7 working days...

But dont assume and don't look down at their work. A "black mass" is unlikely, perhaps it was a cyst or your ovaries which was magnified.

  • Iv had a internal scan today and I asked her if it was anything bad and she said I have to ring the gp Monday to discuss results and she doesn't discuss results is this normal as has left me feeling like there is bad news coming my way very scared

    can anyone relate ?

  • Same thing been Said to me too. What the Gp said?   Xx

  • Iv literally just came from one and I got the same to call the gp on Monday. I hope you're results wher OK I'm now worried sick
