So ... Tamoxifen. Your experiences!

So today I took my first tamoxifen.  I can’t explain why really but the thought of taking this little pill every day for the next 5 years really freaks me out. Even the label on the box that says “take one a day until July 2024” annoys me.

I’m lucky: I’ve got to the ripe old age of 55 without needing to take any regular medication for anything and if I’m totally honest I’m worried about the side effects.

I know it’s a wonder drug and will contribute to keeping me healthy now but I wanted to ask how others are getting along with it .... and when can I expect the hot flushes to kick in?!

  • Hi there ...

Oh my ... I wish I'd found out things before I started tamoxifen.... after a week or two I started getting really emotional .. started crying at the drop of a hat .. didn't have a clue at the time .. ruined my son's birthday party .. ran out crying .. cryed for 2 days solid as I couldn't understand what was happening .. and I'm a pretty tough cooky .. nothing had fazed me befor ...

Then I came and asked on here .. and I found lots of people have different side effects ... emotional .. and bone aches and pains .. no energy ...

Once I knew what it was .. I got a mild anti depressant from G Ps ... and everything evened out ... I've been on them 18 months now ... and everything is fine ... if I'd only known , I'd have been ready and more prepaired ... thank goodness my son was fine and understood ...

Don't worry about one little tablet a day .. just think it's fighting that dreaded cancer to stop it returning .. a little pill is much better then the alternative...lol ...

So go with it .. give it time .. and hopefully you won't get any side effects .. Chrissie x

  • Hello there,

your post rang very true with me, I've had surgery done chemo and done radiotherapy but this little tiny wee pill (anastrozole.....similar to tamoxifen) has had me scared witless. I took my first pill last Thursday night and literally sat there waiting for something to happen!

Its now Monday and it seems I survived the weekend on my new pill! I gave the leaflets regarding side effects to hubby, saying ....only refer to these if I'm having problems.......I'm liable to look for side effects so can't trust myself with the leaflet..

as each day passes I'm relieved that I haven't grown another head or beard....I'm still on herceptin and not long out of rads so I think I'm still feeling the effects of that...

good luck on tamoxifen, fingers crossed we are the lucky ones eh? Xxx

  • Hi

I’m on tamoxifen, first couple of months felt nothing, now I have some side effects but coming off it soon. Each person is different as is their reaction to the medication. So hopefully your time on it will be plain sailing x

  • Hi

I have been on Tamoxifen  for 15 days while having my Radiotherapy , my body aches hot flashes have  found them annoying, on the top  that i am taken Goserelin( injection once a month) so i am not sure if the hot flahses is for the Goserelin. However after terryble time with Chemo this is a walking in the park  people have diffrent side effects. :)
