  • Hi Loopyscrytaltips,

    Thanks for posting.

Please try not to worry, and you mustn’t beat yourself up about not having your smear repeated sooner. The important thing now is that you have been screened and that you are going to colposcopy. You really mustn’t read too much into what the letter has or hasn’t told you.

It’s worth being aware that The NHS Cervical Screening Programme (NHSCSP) is about prevention. The idea is to detect abnormal cells and then further assess them to decide whether to monitor them until things go back to normal, or treat to prevent cancer from developing in the future. Not everyone with abnormal cells goes on to develop cancer.

As I’m sure you will be aware from before at colposcopy they will look closely at cells at the cervix. It is only once you are there that they will know if there are definite changes and whether treatment in needed, or further monitoring. You are right in saying that for many women the cells over time will return to normal without the need for treatment.

I hope all goes well, If you want to talk call on 0808 800 4040 or 020 3469 8355. We are here from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

    Take care,

    Naomi

  • hi loopsycrystaltips,

i am in a very similiar situation. I have 2 minor smears in 2015 and didn’t go back until last week. Even though I was supposed to go back after 6 months.

Like you I am very worried and regret not going back sooner.

i hope you get your results back soon and all is well.

    best wishes xx

  • Hi Bibi42,

Please go and get your smear. Prevention is so much better than cure. I’m on this same band wagon right now and I can’t stand the watch and wait nonsense. It fills me with so much anxiety and fear. I posted what doing on with me in this forum. If you read it and want to connect it would be nice to stay in touch with other women who are also dealing with this.
