Side effect to chemo or septic Arthritis

Hi please can anyone help?

My mum has stage 4 Bowel and secondary Liver Cancer, she received her first round of chemo approximately 4 weeks ago and had a bad reaction, after a few days at home she basically ended up in hospital due to a high temp and sickness. After 2 days in hospital her left wrist started to swell and eventually her hand was extremely swollen and painful. The doctors put her on antibiotic drip/antibiotics, they drained it to test the fluid and they x-rayed, no diagnosis was given, they said it could be gout or sepsis or septic arthritis.

Having just had her 2nd round of chemo she did not have the initial bad reaction due to the doctors giving her antihistamine before. This was 5 days ago, she now has a swollen wrist again, exactly the same symptoms?

Does anyone have any experience of this that can help? We are trying to determine if this is a reaction to the chemotherapy or a separate illness?

What's important to add is she has this swollen wrist but on opposite are 4 years ago prior to being diagnosed.

All advice greatly appreciated.

  • Hello Geric,

I am one of the enquiry nurses. Lucie, our moderator asked us to take a look at your thread in case this is something we had come across. I’m afraid I haven’t myself, but I do just need to say that if she hasn’t already, your mum needs to let her hospital team know that her wrist has swollen up again. I don’t know if it was linked to infection last time but she may need antibiotics  so do let them know that this has happened again.

    All the best,

    Julia
