Should chemo be starting sooner?

Hi all so I am 5 weeks post lumpectomy and node clearance for breast cancer.

My first oncology apponient isn't until nearly 8 weeks post op and this is just to discuss next steps.

Is this not too long nice guidelines recommend 31 days.

Now I am researching all these trials that say not starting chemo soon enough can increase your risk of recurrence.

This is also on top of the possibility of going on the optima trial, which I don't think I will be eligible for now I've waited so long for my oncology review.

Can anyone shed any light.

  • hi I'm post lumpectomy surgery I'm going for radiation planning on the 9th December which will be 9 weeks after the surgery and I don't actually start the radiation until the 18th December which will be 10 weeks I asked the BCN about the long wait for treatment she just said the department is very busy.... I asked about reoccurrence while waiting she said it wouldn't be possible for the cells to start behaving badly in this short time I don't know if she's just saying this to shut me up I've even rang up for any cancellations but wasn't any I know the feeling of waiting is horrible I've been on this journey with a lot of anxiety and waiting for results of tests etc has been the worst I was thankful and lucky not to have chemo. I hope you get your treatment soon .

    best wishes marie x

  • Thanks for your reply Marie.

It's so frustrating. And no one seems to care.

Cells double every 1-3 months according to what I've googled.

I'll be nearly 10 weeks by the time they start.

Silver lining is no treatement Xmas week.

I hope yours goes OK x
