Severe Neutropenia

I'm 26 years old and at the end of January was admitted to hospital with Neutopenic Sepsis.

I have since found out that I have had extremely low neautrophils for about a year but didn't know (previous blood tests reviewed)

within that time I experienced many chest infections coughs and many mouth ulcers and repeated thrush!

I have since been for many blood tests and have had a spleen ultrasound and bone marrow biopsy and aspiration and am now awaiting results.

the wait feels like forever, has anybody else had a diagnosis of neutropenia that lead to a diagnosis of blood cancer?

thanks

  • Hello Frankie and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

Poor you, you've been through so much recently at such a young age and I am so sorry to hear you were admitted to hospital with neutropenic sepsis. I hope they looked after you well there and that you are feeling a bit better now.

How unfortunate that you've had really low levels of neutrophils for about a year without knowing. It's probably not surprising to you in hindsight that you developed chest infections, thrush and mouth ulcers during all that time.

At least it seems like you are having all the tests required at the moment to find out exactly what is causing this. I hope that you won't have to wait too long for your results and many members of our forum are going through this at the moment, waiting for results which seem to take forever. The anxiety that goes with this uncertainty can be enormous and difficult to bear and there are helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news.

I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have had a diagnosis of neutropenia before and that they will be along shortly to share their story with you. Blood Cancer UK have detailed information on neutropenia which may be of interest to you.

I know it's really hard but as you are waiting for a diagnosis, try not to anticipate the worst if you can or look up anything online as it will make you even more worried. I hope you will get more clarity soon on this and do come back here if you get a chance to update us on what you find out.

I also had a little look on the forum for you for past threads from other members who have been affected by neutropenia which you might wish to have a look at and/or respond to. I found, for example, this thread from last year by [@Tinkerbell]‍

Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm if there is anything you would like to ask them or talk through with them.

Best of luck with your results and best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator
