Scared of doctors reaction

So I am a 29 year old female and I have been bleeding from my bowels for a few years and I have stupidly not done anything about it, under the assumption that it was haemorrhoids. Then about a. Month ago my bowel movements changed by small thin like stools, and a mix of constipation and loose stools. I figured I better get checked out and went to the doctor today. After I spoke to her and she felt my stomach and check my rectum she said she needed to refer me to a emergency colonoscopy. She seemed very concern and her reaction was not what I was exspecting. I feel pretty frantic now as of course I have googled colon cancer and the symptoms are so similar to me. Also I have followed a low carb high fat diet for the past couple of years and reading google, having a high fat diet can cause bowel cancer. I have however been really stressed lately and think could my stools be down to stress? I guess I haven't got a question or anything but I am literally so worried now and got such a bad feeling.

  • Hi Charly00.  Welcome to the forum.

I should start out by saying that I'm not a doctor.

I think that whenever anyone presents to a doctor with unexplained bleeding from the rectum, an urgent referral for a colonoscopy is an automatic reaction. Your doctor is acting completely appropriately.

There are a number of possible reasons for your bleeding, and at 29 colon cancer is an unlikely reason, but no one knows until you have the colonoscopy, which should provide you with the answer.

It's easy for me to tell you not to panic (as if I ever follow my own advice when I'm going through something like this!) but panicking doesn't help - and Googling your symptoms doesn't help either.

I suggest that you stop Googling at once, and you might find this video will help you to keep calm: How to Meditate in a Moment

Please tell us how you get on. Best wishes.

  • Thank you, I tried the video and it does help. I think I had already convinced myself that it's the worst outcome before the colonoscopy has even been done.  But your right google does not help and actually since I spoke to the doctor weirdly I have manifested more symptoms such pain in stomach and lack of appetite but I think it's the anxiety that is causing me the symptoms . Again thanks.

  • Hi Charly00.

We've all been there - convincing ourselves of the worst before the results are back, and using Google to feed our fears. And that includes me!

So keep calm; watch the video and maybe find some longer ones that you also find helpful, and try to keep optimistic.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Charly00,

I've been where you are now. I had bleeding on and off for years but because it was bright red I ignored it, I have also always suffered from a loose stomach. It wasn't until I started seeing mucus that I went to the doctors. I had the same exam, pressing really hard on my tummy and the glamorous finger exam. The doctor told me she wasn't sure of the next step and would consult the hospital, 2 days later I get a call from the hospital and am told I'm having the camera on a 2 week referral. You can imagine how frantic that made me. Fast forward 2 weeks, a lot of stress (and moviprep - a drink you have to take the day before), they find nothing but a hemmeroid and I'm advised its probably IBS.

I think everyone fears the worse and Dr Google doesn't help, I ticked most of the boxes for bowel cancer, but I completly ignored the fact I also ticked most of the boxes for IBS, the symptom lists are the same, but you will always pick the scary one.

So please dont fear the worst and stay away from Google, this is a great site to talk to people, I have stayed on this site because I wanted to reply to people, like all the people that replied to my posts.
