Scared I have cancer on my tongue

About 8 weeks ago I saw a lump on my tongue at the back right hand side. I waited a few weeks to see if it would go during which time I stated to be able to feel it. I then made a drs appointment which took 3 weeks. When I saw him he said he wasn’t that worried but to come back in 3 weeks just to check.

When I went back yesterday he said he thought it had changed and not for the better and put in an urgent referrral. I am being seen by the head and neck team a week on Monday.

I am so frightened. I also have low grade intermittent ear pain and I can’t always depressurise my ear on the same side as the lump. I also feel like the lymph gland on that side is slightly swollen.

I am a mum of 3 young children. 45 and stopped smoking 12 years ago. I do drink occasionally (couple of times a month) but I know I have HPV on my cervix.

Couldn this be anything but cancer?

Sorry silly question. I know no one but the drs can tell me that but even the thought of having the tests is terrifying me.

Sorry I just wanted somewhere to write down how I was feeling as it’s filling up my mind.

  • Hello Chippersmum,

Please try not to be frigtened, I'm sure the head and neck team will look after you. When you are worried that you may have cancer, it can be tempting to look for answers online, but this can end up increasing anxiety rather than making you feel better and the only person that can diagnose you is your doctor. it might be worth contacting them to talk you through the appointment so you feel prepared.

    I hope this is helpful,
