Salivary gland removal and radical neck dissection recovery

Hello

My mother has been recently diagnosed with cancer in the salivary gland that has spread to her lymph nodes in her neck. At the present time it is only afftecting one side of her neck and it hasnt spread to her other side of her neck or anywhere else in the body. The doctors are suggesting a radical neck disection to remove all the lympth nodes on one side of her neck, to remove the salivary gland and the main neve in her face.

Obviously it is extremely upsetting and she is very worried about the outcome of the surgery and leading a normal life after. With the main nerve in her face being removed it will paralyse one side of her face and make it difficulty to talk and eat. As she is 75 she is considering not going ahead with the operation due to the side effects and risks associated with the outcome.

Has anyone gone through this type of operation and what were your experiences post op?

Many thanks

Rich
