RIP David Bowie

You can have all the money in the World .... Cancer just don't give a jot.

I do find that after having cancer, through my treatment, I learned a lot about the different types of cancer. Along with this and being on here, I've ended up being a bit of a cancer nerd, snob (might be the wrong word), wally (might be a better adjective), call it what you want.

But whenever I hear of someone famous having cancer, my immediate thought is "That's a real shame, but what cancer have they got or had?"

Although having cancer is never easy, some are more survivorable than others. I was lucky, I just had throat cancer that was caught early. But sometimes the media portrays all cancers as killers, whereas technology has come on so far, that this is not always the case.

However, I am sure that Bowie having cancer was known in the media circles, but it appears to be a family wish to keep this quiet ... big up to the media if this is the case.

(I think i have just moaned and praised the media at the same time)

I will admit that in my own ignorance the on the day i was diagnosed, my immediate thought was "how long have i got?"

Its amazing what a little knowledge and education did for me, to change that thought.

However back to my opening statement ... my thoughts are with the Bowie family .... and everybody else who has lossed a loved one from cancer

Long live Major Tom, Ziggy etc

  • I know what you mean about becoming a cancer nerd.

I've a background in science so I went through an awful lot of the research papers about my wife's condition and treatment - easy when you've only one type to learn about - Oncologists have to learn dozens and dozens of types I guess!

With David Bowie coming 2 weeks after Lemmy I was going to post a list of other people we'd lost to cancer but I thought it might be nicer to look at all the people who survived it: - Pages of them!

    en.wikipedia.org/.../Category:Cancer_survivors

Everybody from Alexandr Solzhenitzyn to Pol Pot - No Cancer really doesn't care does it?

  • What a lovely thread and thank you both for posting your thoughts. it's sometimes difficult to reflect on such high profile media stories when we're all so aware of the feelings of others on the forum. But as you say there are so many people who do survive and with more than 200 different cancers it isn't going to be the same story for everyone.

Our thoughts of course are with David Bowie's family, friends and the millions of fans around the world for whom he was an inspiration and an icon

"The stars look very different today"

  • My wife was a scientist in a previous life and my daughter wants to study Biology at university this year ... so I had lots of reserchers on my team

Long may the list of survivors grow for the famous and us folks ... not seeking fame

  • Hi everyone,

You might be interested to know that Rough Trade records are donating profits from all David Bowie recordings to Cancer Research UK for the rest of this month.

Sir Harpal Kumar, Chief Executive Officer at Cancer Research UK said: “Many of us at Cancer Research UK grew up with and were great fans of his music, so we were very sad to hear the news, particularly given that his death was due to cancer. Our thoughts go out to his friends and family.

"David donated to and supported several Cancer Research UK events over many years and helped us to raise thousands of pounds - we're really grateful for his support.  Every penny that we receive from Rough Trade will help us continue our efforts to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured."

  • Thank you Gary Vatch and CRUK for enabling me to order Blackstar via Rough Trade and benefiting CRUK while enjoying more of the great man's music - RIP Starman and thoughts with his family x
