Reversal recovery problems

I had my ileostomy reversal op 15weeks ago. My wound has still not healed. It becomes infected regularly with pus needed cleaned out each morning. Twice I’ve had internal stitches repelled out. Has this happened to anyone else? Just want to be fully healed to get back to work

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Ems although I'm sorry about the problems you've been having since your reversal op.

There have been a few discussions about life after this procedure one of which I'm going to include just here in case you want to join in or get in touch with anyone there. [@MrsMill]‍ joined the forum a few days ago and has also had a reversal done so hopefully she'll pop by to offer her support and advice now I've tagged her in this post.

I do hope things start to get better soon but if you're worried at any point you're more than welcome to give our cancer nurses a call. You can contact them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    All the best,

  • Hello MnsCV

What a bind with your multiple infections,  it must really be getting you down. I hope your medical team are supportive.

The only thing I can say is don't rush back to work. Your job will still be there when you are fit and ready.  As this bloody disease has taught me life is short, make the most of everyday, even if it is only indulging your self on your favourite snack or tipple or listening to birds singing.

    Take care

  • Thank you Carole,

Have you had a reversal? have you had similar problems with infections?

My doctors really aren’t concerned and think I might contact my surgeons secretary instead. Surely after 15 weeks I should be healed?

  • Hi Ems

Yes, I had my reversal on 27th February.  Fortunately, I have not had problems with infections.  My problems have been to do with actually pooing.  My bowel is really refusing to get into any routine other than feast (many times in one day) and famine (nothing at all and a very bloated and uncomfortable tummy)

It's a good idea to contact your surgeion's secretary, I would have thought that after 15 weeks things should be well on the way to be healed.  I didn't have stitches as my consultant used a 'purse stitch' to keep the wound open so that he could see the granulation inside.  When he cut the stitch the wound just healed.  It did however take about 8 weeks for it to be completely closed.

Good luck, let me know how you get on.

  • My gut hasn’t settled either in going to the loo but I’ve always had bad bowel and live on laxido.

More stitches came out of the wound today so I’m praying  that it settles down.....otherwise I’ll def contact surgeon.

thanks for your help. Hope you eventually settle in to a routine x
