Residual meaning

My mum had a diagnosis of anal cancer in 2016 and still has regular check ups. She also has bipolar so bad news like cancer triggers this. At the start of July she had a PET scan which she said was fine. I've just helped her with her ESA form and her GP has written she has residual symptoms and chemo will be offered when needed-not curative. Does that mean she has terminal cancer??? I am freaking out and she doesn't like to talk about any illness. She has been fine mentally and she would have mania symptoms by now if it had been bad news I'm sure! Thanks guys

  • Hello pearcenear-

Welcome to Cancer Chat! It seems good news that her PET scan in July was fine  but if you are worried about what her GP has written on her ESA form, perhaps for your own peace of mind and to be absolutely sure, you could give her doctor a call and ask whether they could explain to you what this note about residual symptoms and chemotherapy means?

You are also welcome to give our nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm - they may be able to shed some light on this or point you in the right direction.

I am pleased to hear your mum has been fine mentally it does sound reassuring given the effect bad news can have on her mania symtoms.

I hope you get a clear explanation soon. Don't hesitate to get in touch with her medical team. I am sure they will be happy to tell you more about this.

    Best wishes,
