Removal of Kidney and Ureter.

Hi All,

Has anyone had their Kidney and Ureter removed?

Any advice would be most welcome, thank you.

  • Hello Happy.sailor

I've had a look across the forum but I can't see that we've any members who have recently posted about having a kidney and ureter removed. However, if we do then hopefully they will see your post and reply to share their experiences with you.

It might be a good idea to have a look at the Kidney Cancer UK or the Kidney Cancer Support Network websites and their support groups. I'm sure that you'll be able to connect with others via a cancer-specific organisation.

If you'd like to speak to one of our nurses you're most welcome to give them a call. They're available Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi, just to say my husband of 37 years was diagnosed with kidney cancer on 5th Feb 2021! A massive shock! After a barrage of tests and flexible ureteroscopy a further 3 malignant tumours found in his ureter! He had a laparoscopic nephroureterectomy and bladder cuff removed, last week (March 16th). He came home four days after with a bladder catheter! very painful to start with, baby steps (literally"!) today, (March26th) hospital appointment to have some chemotherapy (Mitomycin) flushed through catheter! catheter removed straight after! He didnt feel a thing! been told his kidney cancer was a grade 3, localised and  for grade 2 for ureter! will have regular check-ups to keep a close eye! but been given the all clear! Its been a rollercoaster ride this last 6 weeks emotionally for both of us! I wanted to post this to wish anyone who's been recently diagnosed good luck and you're not alone!! Also, we live near Exeter and the Consultants and specialist urology nurses have been amazing!

  • Hi Anna bun,

Thank you for sharing. I hope your husband is doing well.

I went through the same procedure 3 weeks ago and I am making a good recovery too.

I spoke to my Consultant today reference my biopsy result post Op. I was informed that the cancer has been eradicated and it was stage 3 in my ureter.

He told me that I will need 6 monthly checks over the next few years!

If I may ask, what advice was your Husband given ref check ups etc?

    Take care,

    Happy.Sailor

Thank you for posting here and sharing your experiences. I will shortly undergo the same procedure to treat TCC of left renal pelvis that was discovered after my third investigation in four years for gross hematuria.  Good to hear that the operations went well and acheived the desired outcome. Apart from the need for surveillance what support has been offered for adjusting to life with one kidney - I ask becaused I suffer from hypetension that has been well managed for many years with mediccation.

    Take care and best wishes

  • Hi Sphinxian,

Hope you are ok at the moment.

When I spoke with my consultant 2 weeks ago he informed me that he would see me in 6 months for a CT Scan and a Cystocopy.

When I asked what should I do now that I have one kidney I was told to carry on as normal!

Personally I don't feel any different now that I have one kidney.

I too have Hypertension and the op has not affected me.

I hope all goes well for you and you make a speedy recovery. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to send me a message.

    Good luck and take care.

  • [@Happy.sailor]‍ ,

Thanks for your reply - I am OK thank you and fortunate enough to be able to enjoy a short, long planned, holiday before heading home to start treatment.

Really appreciate your offer to answer any questions.

Take care and best wishes S.

  • Hello thankyou for your post

My husband has bladder cancer T1 grade3 and he starts his 6 week BCG on the 28/5. He is a strong fit 82 year old. Also they found an inconclusive whatever in his ureta and said cancer cells were found round the whatever. So he is having a CT scan with contrast to check it again. If it comes back as cancer then he will have to have his right kidney out even though its not infected and his right ureta. It gives me hope reading your post thankyou
