Referral to breast clinic for daughter

Hello- my daughter has complex needs and a learning disability- she is 16 and on the combined pill for her periods- last week i found what i thought was 1 lump when I was bathing her- I took her right up to the GP who has referred her to the breast clinic- she was asking about a family history of breast cancer ( none) and mentioned fibredenomas- I am so worried I feel so sick and anxious- I have checked the breast again and I think there are two small pea sized lumps close together- it's quite hard to tell- any advice would be welcome x

  • Hi there,

First of all I want to send you my love - I can imagine how scary this must be! I think we often tend to think the worse and associate any lumps with something quite sinister!

I hope this will be quite a reassuring post and put your mind at rest if anything even if its slightly! Although we tend to associate lumps with breast cancer, most of them are benign and happen to be things such as cysts and infections! Approximately 80% of lumps in the breast are benign!

Considering her age, again it is fairly unlikely that it would be anything extremely serious - although, it's good that your gp has referred you, I was told that this is a standard procedure as it's always better to be safe than sorry! Although we cannot not know for sure exactly what it is, I can only hope and say that statistics are in your favour of it not being something very serious!

Im 21, and I noticed a painful lump in my breast a couple of weeks ago and the area is also quite swollen! My gp also referred me to the breast clinic and I got my appointment within a week! The appointment is tomorrow and I'm extremely anxious and nervous as well but trying to stay strong. I've heard from quite a few others that these lumps are more common than we think in young people! I definitely don't want to invalidate your feelings as I can empathise with you - It's extremely worrying! But hopefully it is nothing serious and you get your appointment soon!

Please do let us know how it goes, and if you would like to discuss further feel free to drop me a message! Best of luck to you and your daughter! Xx
