Red spots on biopsy site

I had a core biopsy done yesterday and took off the bandage about 5 hours ago.

Just looked at my breast for the first time since and there are a few tiny pinprick red spots around the biopsy site. Is this normal?

And does anyone know anything about the scale they use? I've been given a score of 4 by the surgeon and radiographer but the radiographer was so positive during my exam and biopsy. I'm so confused!

  • Hello Porcha,

It mentions on our page on the core biopsy that seeing some bruising in the area is normal and that it will normally go within 1 to 2 weeks. I am not sure if these red spots are also to be expected around the biopsy site so perhaps you could give your doctor a call just to check. You could also ask your specialist to explain to you how the scoring system works and what this 4 really means. Feel free also to give our cancer nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 if you'd like to talk things through with them. Their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they may be able to tell you more about this.

I hope that you will also hear from other members of our forum who have had a core biopsy recently and that they will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you Lucie,

They are still there but no itching or tenderness so I'll phone the docs in the morning just to be safe.

I did some googling (I know its bad!) And had a look at the scale, seems 4 is pretty bad but it's not a definite cancer diagnosis so I'm clinging to that and keep thinking "I'm ok, I'll be ok" over and over
