Recovering from cervical cancer

Hi

I was diagnosed with stage 2a cervical cancer in August last year and got the all clear in February. I' not sure how I did it but throughout treatment I managed to stay cheerful and optimistic and was generally doing well. However since I have been put on HRT and am struggling with the tiredness and not being myself which to me seems weird. I dealt with the treatment better! Has anyone else felt the same? People around me don' understand this but how can they if I don'!

Thanks

  • Welcome to the forum, Hibs80!

I noticed you'd not had a reply yet so I thought I'd stop by to link you to a few things that I hope might be helpful.

We have a few ladies on here that are at various stages of recovery from cervical cancer, and the two names that jump to mind immediately are [@Limesbabe]‍and [@LauraP]‍. I spotted that they were chatting relatively recently so hopefully, by tagging them, they'll be along soon to chat with you.

I also wanted to mention Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust because you mentioned HRT and they have lots of information on this on their website: Hormone Replacement Therapy. I hope it's of some help.

Finally, I just wanted to mention our friendly team of cancer nurses, who are just on the other end of the phone if you'd like to speak to them: 0808 800 4040.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hello,

I also had stage 2A cervical cancer about 5 years back. I was not put on HRT (I did not have a hysterectomy) but recovering from the chemo and radiation alone took quite a while. I'd say I was easily tired for at least six months after treatment ended and probably a year before I felt really good.  Exercise was the key to feeling better for me.  I started out just walking and have built up from there.  I hope you begin to feel better and that those around you are supportive! Keep me posted on how you are doing and I'd be happy to answer any questions I can.

  • Hi Laura,

Thanks for the reply. I didn' have a hysterectomy either but was advised HRT was necessary. My doctors have now swapped my tablets to patch so hopefully that will help. Had to have a test for infection this week so waiting on results.

I just get frustrated waiting to feel like me again! I' starting counselling soon though so hope that will help. Glad to hear it' normal to feel tired I've gone from a 30 something to feel like an 80 year old most of the time lol will try to exercise more I've heard from others that helps.

    Thank you

  • Hi Angela,

Therapy is a great thing.  I have been in therapy since towards the end of my treatments until now.  I only go once a month, sometimes every 3 months now. Having someone tell you that your tiredness is normal and that the gurgles, twinges and aches and pains don't necessarily mean cancer is back is the best thing ever! Once you realize your anxiety about things can actually cause a lot of your issues they seem to fade to almost nothing.  Good luck!

  • Hi

i had cervical cancer 2b finished treatment 08/17 coped quite well with treatment, went back work 6 weeks after treatment only 24 hours or less a week but now doing 36-48 hours, I struggled with tiredness but I also have my work to blame for as I a carer for dementia and Alzheimer’s residents, but even a 6 hour shift morning shift I feel like I have done a 12 hour shift, but I have earn money to pay the bills.

i am going on hrt patches next Wednesday as I have mood swings and cry for no reason at work and that  embarrassing . I’ll let know how I get on.

i also feel that people don’t understand when I say I have this wrong or that wrong, I case of thinking oh it maybe related to the treatment I have, they said oh I have or had that and compare me to them, even my husband says instead of looking at the bigger picture.

anything else you want to know just ask.
