Recently diagnosed bowel cancer

Hello,

i had my colonoscopy on Tuesday and was told straight after that I have cancer. I had a 4cm polyp in the lower part of my bowel. The dr could not complete the procedure as I was in too much pain. I have a CT colonoscopy in 2 weeks time and anxious is an understatement. I was asked when I was being prepared for the procedure why I was having it as I'm so young (39) by the dr. I think too many are dismissive of someone because of their age.

  • HI

I read your post with huge interest - your timing is so similar to mine - I have also recently been diagnosed with Bowel Cancer and after, like you, a failed colonoscopy - a large polyp 6cm was blocking the process - I had another under General Anesthetic to be told that yes it was cancerous - early stages, thank goodness.

i am having my surgery on the 13th Feb - a colonectomy I think is what it is called, and am still in some kind of shock. i was very matter of fact and actually quite up beat during my consultation, but now with 2 weeks to go before the surgery I find I am quite upset - but doing an excellent job of keeping most of my worries and fears to myself.

I have contacted Macmillian cancer - their advice line is excellent, and I have been given the name and number of my support nurse who is lovely. She said to call her with any questions and queries before, during and after my hospital stay but to be honest I think just for now, I need to find a way to get my head around this unexpected turn of events.

I hope you get your answers soon my lovley

  • Hi Fran,

How long was it between the colonoscopy and your upcoming surgery?  I think for the most of it, it is denial. I am still in shock tbh. I will reach out to the macmillan nurses too. They were brilliant when my dad had cancer.

all the best for your op. Will be crossing everything for you. Let me know how it goes

  • Hey Sarah

It was really quick - I had my first colonoscopy which was unsuccessful on January 3rd, my second colonoscopy was under general anesthetic on 10th January and my diagnosis was given to me on the 20th the same day they arranged the meet with the consultant which was the 25th.  On that day I was given my stage and also my operation date - the whole thing was approx 3 weeks or so - no complaints about timing but it is worrying when you waiting for an appt, consultation or operation as the mind goes all over the place -

I am sure I will be fine and I will certainly be making use of my family and friends as hot and cold running servants whilst I am recovering!!!

Look after yourself and let me know how you are getting on I'm sure once the ball is rolling you will feel much more reassured -

  • Hi

It is a bit scary reading your post as I am also 39 and awaiting a colonoscopy and I have convinced myself I could have nothing else and that I am riddled with it.

Can I ask what your symptoms were/are? I understand if you do not feel comfortable to tell me.

I wish both of you all the luck in your treatment and that you both recover well.

  • Hi,

I have been diagnosed with IBS for around 10 years but over the last few months I have noticed blood in my stool and often not making it to the loo in time.  I had blood tests with my dr and found out a month later that they had a high FIT content.  I have been assured that at 39 we have age on our side.  I have a ultrasound on the 7th and CT Colonoscopy on 10th so hopefully they can get see if it has spread.

Are you being sedated for your procedure? they forgot to put the canula in my hand until 1 min before the op so it didn't have time to do its magic, but i'm sure yours will be more smooth.

I really hope yours is a false alarm but i wish you all the best, let me know.

  • I have no idea what is happening with the colonoscopy. I was getting a blood test with the nurse when the doctor called and said theres a wee bit of blood , asked if i was still bleeding..i dont knoe because im on iron tabs so its all went black.then she said ok you will get seen in a couple of werk for the colonoscopy and that was it. I have no idea about anything.

Positive thougts for you, I am hoping the cancer is contained and an operation will get it all out of you.
