Recalled after first Mammogram.

I had my first mammogram 9 days ago. I received a phone call today from the hospital to attend a second appointment on Tuesday. The nurse I spoke to couldn't tell me too much over the phone . I'm just wondering what to expect?

  • Hi Trixiebella

Welcome to the forum. I had a recall after my first mammogram and had to have more mammograms, a physical breast exam, and an ultrasound. Unfortunately, they had found abnormalities and then underwent biopsies that same day.

There were about 30 in the room that all had been recalled, 3 of us had to have biopsies while the rest got the all-clear.

My sister gets recalled after every mammogram but it's due to shadows that need to be checked out.

Try not to worry as the majority recalled won't have cancer.

  • Hello

I had an routine appointment on the 19th May  everything was fine i had no symptoms connected to the breasts and answered all their questions.

A week letter yesterday i received a recall letter to have an assessment i was shocked and my heart was pounding,  i couldn't sleep or eat. Im due back on the 9th June for the assessment  my partner is coming with me.

All i have been doing is Google search  and even feeling and examining my breast to see if i had missed something. The only thing i could feel was a tiny lump just beside my nipple on the right side just very slightly under the skin..which i have to admit i hadnt noticed before...now im Googling little bumps under skin near nipple......

    Im just so worried

    Thank you

    Marina xx

  • Hello and thanks for your post

A mammogram can show up an area that the doctors are not sure about, but they can't confirm what it is as more information is needed before a result can be given. This often means a repeat mammogram and possibly further tests such as an ultrasound and a biopsy.

Most women who get a recall turn out not to have cancer. Also, women who have had their first breast screening are more likely to be recalled than those who are having subsequent mammograms. This is because, if there are any question marks there are no previous breast x-rays that the specialist can use to compare 'the problem area' with to look for changes.

The organisation Breast Cancer Now have information on their website about screening recall and you might like to read it here. This gives a little more detail about the points I have mentioned.

There is no way around having to wait for the outcome of the recall. Most people find waiting in a situation like this stressful. But hopefully you will know more soon.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Please don't google, it really won't be of any use to you. and will only increase anxiety. They may be interested in the little lump and want to use a magnified mammogram just to get a better look, which is a good thing. Trust me if there is anything there then you want them to be thorough.

Hopefully, it will be nothing to worry about x
